Under general supervision, performs specialized radio and communications work for the City Police Department, serving as radio dispatcher on an assigned shift. Work involves receiving incoming calls, dispatching applicable personnel, and operating a computer terminal connected to the Florida Crime Information Center, National Crime Information Center. Work also includes dispatching units or representatives from the City Police and Fire department, requesting units from Brevard County Fire Rescue, other law enforcement agencies, wildlife services, animal control, etc. Reports to the Communications Center Supervisor.

Must be able to pass the Florida Crime Information Center/National Crime Information Center (FCIC/NCIC) background check.

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS

  • Answers all telephone lines (E911 and administrative).  Receives complaints, calls for help, reports of deaths, injuries, suicide attempts, robberies, fires, accidents, burglaries, alarms, missing persons, stolen vehicles, etc.  Determines the nature and location of the emergency; determine priorities, and dispatch police, fire ambulance or other emergency units as necessary and in accordance with established procedures. 
  • Monitors and operates TDD teletype to communicate with hearing or speech impaired callers.
  • Receives and records all data reported for officer response.  Analyzes the information for input into the Computer-Aided Dispatch System.  Updates responding units to changes or further information received pertaining to calls they are responding.  Maintains contact with all units on assignment. Monitors officer status at all times- location and availability.
  • Operates emergency communication systems to receive and transmit messages for City Police and Fire departments. Monitors several public safety radio frequencies. 
  • Requests assistance from other law enforcement agencies, Brevard County Fire Rescue, air ambulance services, public utilities, animal control, wildlife services, various human services agencies, etc.; receives complaints and requests for service by telephone or radio and in person; obtains necessary information and dispatches necessary officials.
  • Operates a computer terminal connected to a network which includes the Florida Crime Information Center, the National Crime Information Center. Corresponds with other law enforcement or public serv­ices jurisdictions through computer system; processes and maintains records of information obtained.

ADDITIONAL JOB FUNCTIONS

  • Performs routine maintenance of office equipment and work area.
  • Performs other related work as required.

Qualifications

Graduation from high school, or any equivalent combination of training and experience which provides the required knowledge, skills and abilities.  Must not have been on probation for the conviction of a felony or of a misdemeanor involving moral turpitude, as defined by law.  Requires minimum 45 wpm typing speed when tested.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS

Within twelve months of being assigned to position must attain Public Safety Telecommunicator certification by the Florida Department of Health. This is a condition of continued employment.
