Martenson, Hasbrouck & Simon LLP (“MHS”) is a national law firm focusing on labor and employment defense and business litigation. Based in Atlanta, with additional offices in San Diego, Carlsbad, Chicago, Dallas, New York, and Sacramento, MHS litigates labor and employment matters on behalf of all of its clients, including several national employers.

MHS is seeking an experienced full-time Legal Assistant for our San Diego office. This position includes working directly with partners, associates, and other staff in various aspects of assigned cases.  MHS offers tuition assistance to qualified legal assistants who would like to pursue paralegal certification as part of their career path.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Calculating and calendaring deadlines.
  • Managing case files, including threatened litigation, administrative charges, and litigation matters.
  • Corresponding with courts, clients, local counsel, and opposing counsel.
  • Managing document productions.
  • Preparing, revising, and formatting pleadings, briefs, correspondence, and other legal documents.
  • Filing in both state and federal courts and with administrative agencies.
  • Assisting in preparation for depositions, mediations, settlement conferences, and hearings.
  • Coordinating courses of action with supervising attorneys.
  • Responsible for recording personal billable time.

Qualifications

  • Prior legal experience necessary; employment law background is a plus.
  • High-quality level of customer service, professionalism, and interpersonal skills (oral and written) as the role requires various interactions with attorneys, courts and administrative agencies, local and opposing counsel, as well as firm clients.
  • Bachelor’s degree preferred.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office software, including Outlook, Word, and Excel.
  • Knowledge of Adobe (or similar) software and ability to create, edit, modify, redact, and protect pdf files.
  • Experience with document management software – NetDocuments knowledge is a plus.
  • Must be self-motivated and proactive.
  • Attention to detail.
  • Ability to multitask in a fast-paced, deadline driven environment.
  • Strong organizational, time management, and project management skills.
