Description

The Health Sciences & Technology Librarian is responsible for maintaining access to the MBKU Library’s electronic resources, including the website, EBSCO Discovery Service, and the Integrated Library System. The Librarian serves as the liaison to the Southern California College of Optometry and provides research, curriculum, and clinical support to faculty, researchers, residents, and students.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSI­­BILITIES

  • Manage the library in the absence of the Director.
  • Provide liaison librarian services to the students, faculty, and staff in the Optometry program. Liaison services include instruction programs using traditional classroom and active learning methods, consultation, and literature searching, among other activities.
  • Provides one-on-one teaching sessions and specialized search assistance and builds relationships with Optometry faculty, staff, and students in order to support all research endeavors.
  • Supervise library work-study personnel. Interview and select final candidates. Schedule work shifts each quarter, instruct and train new hires, and supervise and oversee the quality of daily work. Organize and instruct students for long-term library projects. Process payroll of all student workers.
  • Has knowledge of optometry, physician assistant, pharmacy, and health sciences literature and resources. Creates and develops subject guides, instructional materials, and web tutorials for the library website.
  • Organizes, develops and facilitates library orientations for new students and faculty.
  • Develops and instructs classes in information literacy, the use of new technologies, EndNote, and other school-approved software. Creates lesson plans, handouts, and presentations for in-class instruction.
  • Maintains and troubleshoots technical issues related to the library website and technology. Acts as the library liaison to the IT department. Updates and manages the library’s Integrated Library System (ILS). Coordinates ILS updates with software providers, library and IT department. Updates and maintains electronic resources on the library’s website.
  • Organizes, updates, and maintains the EBSCO Discovery Service platform (EDS), troubleshoots issues with EDS as they arise, and acts as the first point of contact with EDS Support and IT staff. Maintains EZProxy access to databases, manages login interfaces, and provides login access accounts to SPAS, COP, SCCO outreach, residents, and preceptors.
  • Prepares and conducts surveys regarding current and future library needs.
  • Develop outreach activities and communication to promote library programming, resources, and services.
  • Attends professional library conferences, seminars, and network committees; reads professional literature; attends and participates in staff meeting discussions. Completes special projects and tasks. Works on University and Professional committees as assigned. Serve on library, university, and professional committees.
  • Assists the Director with collection development, research, documentation, and processing as needed.
  • Other duties as needed.

QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS

Required:

The incumbent must have proficient knowledge in the following areas:

  • Library ethics and professional standards.
  • Experience maintaining library systems.
  • Experience teaching library instruction sessions.
  • Ability to work well in a team environment.

Preferred:

  • Proficiency with search techniques across a variety of health sciences and biomedical resources; in-depth experience with PubMed and AMA.
  • Has experience with HTML and CSS, and using content management software such as LibGuides.

EDUCATION AND/OR EXPERIENCE

  • Master’s degree in Library Science (M.L.I.S.) or equivalent from an ALA accredited library school.
  • Two to five years of relevant experience and/or training or equivalent combination of education and experience.
