JOB SUMMARY:

The Surgical Technician is responsible for assisting surgeons during surgical procedures by anticipating surgeon needs to make sure the procedure is executed as smoothly and efficiently as possible. They prepare and organize the operating room, clean, and sterilize equipment, and maintain a sterile environment.

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

    1. Assists physicians during procedures, the surgical technician must maintain and be able to:
      • Has a working knowledge of equipment maintenance and care.
      • Assists in the performance of surgeries, to include biopsy.
      • Labels specimens correctly.
    2. Assists in transport of patient to recovery.
    3. Communicates patient information to the recovery RN.
    4. Prepares room, anticipates, and checks all equipment needs prior to procedure.
    5. Treats family and patients with respect and dignity.
    6. Carries out medical and procedural aseptic techniques and universal precautions.
    7. Meets current documentation standards and policies and complete them during each workday.
    8. Assists in the positioning of the patient.
    9. Reports changes in the patient’s condition or reports of pain appropriately to RN or physician.
    10. Assists in Code situations.
    11. Maintains a safe environment for patient, coworkers, and self.
    12. Assists in the par levels for supplies by tracking and reporting needs to the Surgery Supervisor or Surgery Center Manager.
    13. Maintain logs needed in the cleaning area for chemicals and equipment use.
    14. Must comply with all HIPAA and safety policies, procedures, and regulations.

Qualifications

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:

  1. Graduate of an accredited Surgical Tech school
  2. At least 1-3 years of practice – preferably in a pre-operative setting, or in an operating room.

 

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES:

  1. Strong interpersonal and communication skills.
  2. Exceptional organizational, problem-solving skills, analytical, and customer service skills.
  3. Proficient in Microsoft Office products.
  4. Proficient in reporting software
  5. Must have exceptional attention to detail.
  6. Personal qualities of integrity, credibility, and commitment.
  7. Flexible and able to multi-task; works within a fast-moving environment.

 

WORKING CONDITIONS AND PHYSICAL EFFORT:

  • Full-time position with a work schedule of Monday through Friday 7:00am to 3:30pm.
  • Position operates in a surgical environment requiring moderate physical activity.
  • Physically capable of positioning patients, transporting patients by cart or wheelchair, and lifting moving or transporting supplies, instruments, and equipment within reasonable weight limits.

  • Physical demands include but are not limited to:
  • The ability to sit, stand, walk, and use hands and fingers to operate a computer keyboard, mouse, and telephone to talk and hear.
  • The ability to frequently sit and reach with hands and arms.
  • The ability to occasionally lift and/or move up to 50 pounds.
  • Must be able to utilize office equipment such as desktop/laptop computers, copiers, printers, scanners, telephones, and calculators.
