Role Description:
The Junior Agronomist is responsible for assisting in the overall planning and management of the fields through hands-on evaluations and plan development. The position will also support the Research Agronomy team in the development of new processes and technologies.
Core Responsibilities:
- Support commercial crop production through scouting and hands-on field work. (70%)
- Evaluate plant maturity, including sugar testing and yield forecasting for crops
- Monitor soil conditions and develop irrigation schedules.
- Utilize resources and data to establish pest management strategies.
- Assist in the development of fertilizer recommendations.
- Working with Heartland Leadership, assist in the development of best production and agronomic practices to optimize yields, quality, and efficiency: (30%)
- Assist with storage management and bruise-free handling program.
- Contribute to the success of the farm through the study and implementation of new processes and practices from seed cutting through harvesting.
- Collaborate with the Research Agronomy and Irrigation Teams to identify and provide insights into key production and storage issues.
- All other duties as assigned by the Farm Manager or VP of Operations
Preferred Experience:
- Bachelors Degree in Agriculture with an emphasis on agronomy, crop, soil, weed management or other ag science course work
- Experience in potato operations, a plus
Work Schedule:
- The Junior Agronomists work schedule is highly dependent on the time of year and weather conditions. Employees will be expected to work as needed, which will require a great deal of flexibility as to the hours per day/week and the times worked. Seasonally, 60+ hour weeks are not uncommon.
Physical Requirements:
- Must be 18 years of age, or older at the time of hire.
- Requires the ability to work on-site and in multiple locations and settings, traveling locally up to 70% of the time.
- Requires the ability to clearly understand verbal and written communication from others in person and by telephone.
Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities:
- Must hold a valid, clean drivers license.
- Self-starter when working independently or in a collaborative group setting
- Utilizes technology in all aspects of the position
- Strong analytical skills
