What are we looking for in a Peer Bridger?

Peer Bridgers use their own lived experience with mental health or substance use treatment to help support & motivate clients who are currently preparing for discharge from inpatient or residential facilities. The Peer Bridger works to engage these clients for whom transitioning back to community living may pose extra challenges. The Peer Bridger will provide services both in the inpatient facility and the community, educating staff on recovery & peer support and advocating for the client. After discharge from the inpatient unit, Peer Bridgers educate clients about independent living skills, coping skills, community adjustment skills, and self-advocacy. This position is best suited for someone who is ready to use their own experiences to support others and is willing to travel on a daily basis, including routine travel throughout the state. The Peer Bridger schedule is as follows: M-W 8:00-5:00, Th 7:00-6:00,  Fri 8:00-5:00  Due to Thursday 12 hour day, four total hours will be flexed from the M-W, F schedule


Peer Bridger duties may include:

  • building a relationship with clients while they’re in an inpatient or residential facility to provide a warm handoff to the outpatient treatment
  • staying engaged with each client for 3-4 months after discharge, participating in treatment activities & crisis planning at the client’s request
  • sharing personal experiences of recovery, as appropriate, to encourage clients in their treatment
  • modeling ways to engage with others to increase social supports, develop meaningful relationships, and access & navigate community resources
  • assessing clients for safety and risk to self or others, and taking appropriate crisis intervention measures when indicated
  • participating in crisis & treatment planning and advocating for the client’s wishes and perspectives throughout the process
  • completing all required documentation in a timely manner

Qualifications:

  • High school diploma or GED
  • Must be a self-identified consumer of behavioral health services stable in recovery for at least one year
  • Eligible for Peer Counselor certification provided by the Washington State Healthcare Authority: https://www.hca.wa.gov/billers-providers-partners/program-information-providers/peer-support
  • Must be eligible for registration as Agency Affiliated Counselor
  • Must have valid driver's license, vehicle liability insurance, and safe driving record
