The Northwest School is a college-preparatory, co-educational independent school near the heart of downtown Seattle. We offer a rich and challenging program to about 400 students in grades 6 through 12, including international students, many of whom live in our campus dormitory.

Learning to ask salient questions is the core of our science program. Open-ended lab work teaches students to devise ways of exploring and testing scientific concepts. Our program provides rare opportunities for field research in ethnobotany, photochemistry, and field ecology. We seek a full-time 1 FTE Upper School Biology teacher for the 2024-2025 school year.

 

Essential Functions:

  • Teach three sections of Biology & one section of 12th grade Advance Biology.
  • Coordinate curricula with other science teachers and grade level teachers.
  • Cultive positive family partnerships
  • Participate fully in the life of the school which includes collaborating effectively and collegially with a teaching team, grade-level, and department; engage regularly in formal, ongoing professional development beyond school based in- service; support colleagues and the school by substituting for absent teachers; participate in meetings, committees, and community gatherings; and know, understand, and uphold the mission, philosophy and values of the school. All teachers contribute to the school mission and community with activities such as supporting student social-emotional learning, interest groups (clubs), social events, and grade level trips.

Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications:

•    All candidates must demonstrate a commitment to the school’s mission, values, and philosophy, especially related to diversity, equity, and inclusion; environmental sustainability, and global perspective.
•    A Bachelor's degree in Biology or a related field and at least 2 years of upper school science teaching, or an equivalent combination of education and experience sufficient to perform the essential functions of the job.
•    Candidates must demonstrate an ability to establish an effective learning environment and use a wide range of teaching methods. 
•    Knowledge and experience with differentiation to effectively design curricula to meet the needs of a diverse student population. 
•    Experience teaching a diverse student body through a social justice lens.
•    Ability to provide additional outside-of-classroom instruction when necessary for remedial or accelerated work.  
•    Ability to assess student progress through a variety of assessment instruments. Familiarity with Standards-Based Grading practices is preferred.  
•    An ability to work both independently and as a productive member of a team. 

 

Compensation:

Salary range for this Salary range is $57,369- $104,618 based on education & years of experience. A retirement program matches up to 6% of an employee's salary after one year of service in a 403(b) plan.
