JOB SUMMARY:

The PV Design Engineering Intern develops technical design deliverables to support commercial and utility-scale solar electric system projects. The intern will execute engineering tasks focused on detailed system design, equipment specification, and technical optimization. They will perform engineering calculations, create technical drawing packages, and ensure designs comply with applicable codes and standards. Deliverables include equipment specifications, detailed design drawings, electrical diagrams, and performance analyses. The Design Engineering Intern will work closely with senior engineers to develop optimal technical solutions for each project, balancing performance, cost, and constructability. Additionally, they may support special projects related to new technology evaluation, design standardization, and technical procedure development.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Develop detailed PV system designs using industry software including AutoCAD, PVsyst, HelioScope, and others
  • Create comprehensive drawing packages including site layouts, equipment placement, mounting details, and electrical diagrams
  • Perform detailed engineering calculations for string sizing, voltage drop, structural loading, and energy production
  • Study and apply principles from the National Electrical Code (NEC), International Building Code (IBC), International Fire Code (IFC), and National Electrical Safety Code (NESC)
  • Conduct equipment selection analysis and develop technical specifications
  • Optimize system designs for maximum energy production, constructability, and cost-effectiveness
  • Develop and maintain engineering standard operating procedures
  • Create 3D models and visualizations of solar systems when required
  • Support technical portions of utility interconnection applications
  • Assist with technical reviews of vendor submittals and equipment specifications
  • Perform energy production modeling, electricity tariff analysis, and load versus generation analysis
  • Participate in technical design reviews and incorporate engineering feedback
  • Assist in component testing and validation procedures
  • Conduct site-specific engineering analyses to address unique project requirements
  • Develop technical documentation for permit applications and design packages

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES:

The PV Design Engineering Intern does not currently supervise any staff members.

MINIMUM EDUCATION, SKILLS & EXPERIENCE:

High school diploma and three years progress towards a Bachelor of Science degree in Electrical, Mechanical, Civil Engineering or related field required. Graduating seniors with a BS degree in Engineering will be given priority. Conceptual understanding of solar photovoltaic technology and grid-tied solar PV systems. Understanding and working familiarity with AutoCAD software is a plus, as well as proficiency with MS Office suite.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS:

Conducts work in both a field-type environment or in a professional office setting with local travel to jobsites to conduct inspections.

Physical working conditions may involve the following:

• Lifting up to 50 pounds.

• Extended periods of sitting, walking, standing, reaching, and/or bending.

• Extended periods of reading fine print on a computer or in paper-based format.

POTENTIAL HAZARDS:

Routine aspects of this position may place the incumbent in situations where they may be susceptible to potential hazards from the following:

• Trips, slips and/or falls while on customer property.

• Chemical abrasives used in office and kitchen cleaning.
