About the Organization

Founded as separate organizations in 1948, Jewish Long Beach and the Barbara and Ray Alpert JCC (AJCC) are the newly merged single agency serving the functions of a Jewish community center, Jewish federation, and Jewish community foundation for the Long Beach and west Orange County areas. Jewish Long Beach and the AJCC administer a wide variety of programs and services, rooted in Jewish values but open to all, including early childhood education, summer camp, and after-school programs, adult education, services for seniors, leadership development, fitness and wellness programs, advocacy, and much more. Jewish Long Beach also awards nearly $500,000 in grants annually to a variety of nonprofit agencies throughout the Long Beach area and overseas. The organization owns and operates an eight-acre multi-use campus in east Long Beach, has an annual operating budget of approximately $7 million, and manages approximately $35 million in philanthropic assets.

 

Position Summary

The Personal Trainer is a position that is responsible for providing professional one-on-one personal fitness training and personal, friendly service to members of the Alpert JCC.

 

Essential Position Responsibilities

  • Greet and/or interact with every member in the Fitness Center and communicate with members on a first name basis to create a friendly, non-intimidating atmosphere
  • Provide professional one–on-one personal fitness training scheduled at the convenience of the trainer and client/member.
  • Maintain current, clear and concise records of trainer/client personal training sessions
  • Provide motivation and guidance throughout training session(s) 
  • Communicate effectively and exhibit good listening skills pertinent to the client’s goals, needs, expectations and limitations of a personal workout program
  • Obtain a health history and/or medical release from client’s physician prior to the personal training sessions in order to effectively modify (if needed) any exercise(s) specific to the client’s condition(s)
  • Cleaning of fitness equipment that is required for class before and after usage
  • Monitor closely the use of selected strength training equipment, hand weights, resistance tubing and/or additional equipment for correct, effective use and injury prevention.
  • Alert to the warning signs of overexertion and responds accordingly
  • Monitor participants’ skill level and adjusts exercise(s) accordingly. Instructs participants on proper monitoring of exercise intensity including maximum heart rate, target heart rate range and anaerobic training zone
  • Attend staff meetings and seminars as instructed
  • Maintain current CPR certification and national group fitness certification and attends continuing education seminars to stay abreast of industry standards regarding health, fitness, strength training and nutrition
  • Wear proper exercise attire that is not too constrictive or revealing, but tastefully displays the body and muscles relevant to the personal training session to facilitate client acquisition of movement and exercises   
  • Maintain the highest quality of courtesy, friendliness and service excellence toward members, visitors and other staff
  • Cleaning of fitness equipment that is required for class before and after usage
  • Understand and support the AJCC’s mission and values
  • Work effectively with all staff members
  • Ability to conduct Virtual Personal Training
  • Additional responsibilities may be assigned

Qualifications

Education, Experience and Requirements

  • Knowledgeable in exercise physiology, anatomy, injury prevention and monitoring exercise intensity as evidenced by certification through a nationally recognized organization
  • Holds a certificate/degree in a related medical or physical education discipline
  • Has extensive experience in fitness training
  • Keeps current with research through association membership, journals and educational events

 

Supervisory Responsibilities

No supervisory responsibilities required.

 

Physical Demands

While performing the duties of this job, the Personal Trainer is regularly required to use hands to handle or feel objects, equipment or controls, reach with hands and arms, and talk and hear.  The employee must be able to frequently lift and/or move up to 50 pounds.

 

Work Environment

The noise level in this work environment varies but is minimal.
