POSITION SUMMARY

 

The Technical Services and Systems Librarian serves as the coordinator for ordering, organizing, cataloging, and maintaining the library’s print and non-print collections in order to maximize patrons’ access to academic information. The Technical Services and Systems Librarian is the administrator for the library’s Integrated Library System (ILS) software and the lead librarian in interfacing with the Online Computer Library Center (OCLC) and the Information Technology department concerning operation of the library technology systems. The Technical Services and Systems Librarian assumes responsibility for supervising and implementing activities of the library’s Technical Services area, provides Interlibrary Loan service to students, faculty, and staff, helps with assisting patrons with public services activities and maintains the library’s website.


TASKS & RESPONSIBILITIES

 

  • Coordinates the general operation of the media and technical services areas of the library, which includes record keeping, assessment of outcomes, and web maintenance.
  • Provides leadership and creative vision for the implementation of a comprehensive and effective technical services and systems program which provides other service areas of the library with enhanced ability to serve patrons effectively.
  • Catalogs all books, materials, and media according to Library of Congress classification and current national cataloging standards.
  • Assists users in the selection of resources from the media collection.
  • Performs authority control and other updates to bibliographic, item, and authority records to ensure that information is complete, accurate, and properly coded.
  • Manages the ILS and online catalog, which includes developing and processing database reports, upgrading and troubleshooting the library management system, and improving quality, usability, and appearance.
  • Works closely with vendors, the I.T. department, and other librarians as needed to accomplish these objectives.
  • Plans and implements for future expansion of services in areas of library technology.
  • Maintains a “wish list” of software and hardware for purchase and a database of library-owned media hardware.
  • Provides interlibrary loan services; lends and borrows materials in cooperation with outside institutions as requested.
  • Serves on the Public Services desk providing assistance as needed.
  • Administers virtual Chat Reference.
  • Submits monthly reports to the Director of Library and Media Services.
  • Develops, implements and evaluates library policies and procedures as needed in collaboration with the library professional staff and Director of Library and Media Services.
  • Works with the Director of Library and Media Services and other library staff members in planning and implementing library enhancements for improved quality service.
  • Participates in continuing education and professional development opportunities.
  • Works occasional evening and weekend hours, which may be necessary to accommodate institutional events and needs.
  • Undertakes other duties as assigned by the Director of Library and Media Services for continued, effective, and quality library service.

 

Qualifications

  • Master’s degree in library science or information science from an ALA-accredited library school.
  • Demonstrated experience in a systems and technical librarian position at an academic library preferred.

 

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, & ABILITIES

 

  • Ability to catalog materials using the OCLC network and Library of Congress classification.
  • Knowledge of emerging technologies, including online library systems and web tools, is essential.
  • Knowledge of Microsoft Suite, ADOBE, and web development software and applications.
  • Ability to communicate and work effectively with students, faculty and staff from diverse multi-cultural socio-economic populations in public settings.
  • Ability to work productively in a team environment with information technology and library personnel.
  • Commitment to the university’s strategic plan, mission and vision of the University.

 

SUPERVISION

 

  • This position reports to the Director of Library and Media Services

 

SALARY RANGE

 

  • $ 44,000 - $49,000 Annually, plus benefits!

 

POSITION STATUS

 

  • Full-time; in-person.

Founded in 1875, Huston-Tillotson University is Austin's first institution of higher education. The University is an independent, liberal arts, church-related, historically black institution located on a 23-acre tree-lined campus near downtown Austin, Texas. The University is affiliated with United Methodist Church, the United Church of Christ, and the United Negro College Fund. Undergraduate, four-year degrees in business, education, the humanities, natural sciences, and social sciences are awarded.
