Description

Tahoe Donner Association is looking for a Trails Maintenance Equipment Operator to join our Trails Crew! The Trails Maintenance Equipment Operator is responsible for the clearing of logs, brushes and rocks from trail corridors.  This position is also responsible for building, improving and cleaning of trail drainage structures such as water bars, check dams, drain clips and French drains.  This position assists in the construction of new trails and the realignment of existing trails, closing and rehabilitation/obliteration of unsustainable trails, construction and/or maintenance of structures including bridges, steps, culvers and turnpikes, and in the installation and removal of trail system signage.

 

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

  1. Falls, bucks and limbs trees with gas-powered chainsaws and power pole-saws.  Operates within the scope of individual training, experience and skill level, wearing proper PPE while operating.
  2. Operates heavy machinery to construct new trails and maintain existing trails. 
  3.  Assists trail hand crew on the ground as needed.  
  4. Assists in trail construction and maintenance projects.  Installs signs.  Hikes on steep and rugged terrain while carrying up to 75 pounds (packs, tools and equipment).
  5. Operates and maintains heavy equipment and vehicles (as qualifications, skill, project needs dictate, and as training opportunities allow).  Heavy equipment including (but not limited to): mini excavator, front end loader, backhoe, mini tracked loader, dozer, tow-behind chippers, whole tree tracked chipper, snowcat, skid steer, motorized augers, concrete buggy, plate compactor, water truck and grapple truck.
  6. Assists with facility and vehicle maintenance and cleaning as needed and directed.

Qualifications

We are looking for the following qualifications:

•    Requires possession of valid Class C Driver License with a driving record meeting the minimum standards required by the Association insurance carrier.  
•    Possession and maintenance of a valid California Class ‘A’ or ‘B’ commercial driver’s license.
•    Experience operating machinery on steep side slopes in brushy/rocky terrain.
•    Proficient with using and placing proper BMP’s.
•    Skilled at single track trail design and road grading.
•    Current CPR/AED/Basic First Aid certification recommended.
•    Attention to detail is crucial to this position.
•    Ability to read and comprehend instructions, work orders, equipment manuals, short correspondence, and memos.
•    Ability to resolve problems involving limited concrete variables within standardized parameters.
•    Ability to write simple correspondence.
•    Ability to effectively present information to individuals and groups.
•    Ability to compute rate, ratio and percent.
•    Ability to understand geospatial representations, worksite location properties and parameters.
•    Ability to apply sound judgement in the safe operation of equipment.
•    Strong communication skills desired.
•    Physical fitness recommended.
•    Ability to follow written and verbal direction required.

These skills and abilities are typically acquired through the completion of high school diploma or equivalent and relevant experience and/or training in forestry equipment operation, tree falling and chainsaw operation, and/or an equivalent combination of formal training, education and experience which demonstrates the ability to perform all of the duties of the position.
