JOB TITLE: Assistant City Prosecutor

SALARY: $75,000 to $90,000 Annually
Under the general direction of the City Attorney and daily supervision of the Chief City Prosecutor, assists in prosecuting all violations of the Cheyenne Municipal Code pending before the Cheyenne Municipal Court. Responsibilities include interviewing witnesses, reviewing police reports, conducting legal research, planning case strategies, drafting pleadings, responding to motions, presenting evidence in court, and performing all other tasks necessary for the effective prosecution of cases within the jurisdiction of the Cheyenne Municipal Court.
PRIMARY DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
- Conduct general legal research using law libraries, electronic databases, and other resources; remain up to date on relevant legal issues and developments.
- Interview witnesses and prepare testimony and related materials for trial.
- Review and analyze police reports, laboratory results, and other investigative materials.
- Coordinate with crime victims regarding restitution and provide guidance on their rights under the Wyoming Victim’s Bill of Rights.
- Draft and prepare a variety of legal documents, including briefs, pleadings, correspondence, and memoranda.
- Represent the City of Cheyenne in all proceedings before the Cheyenne Municipal Court, including both bench and jury trials.
- Prepare and respond to appellate filings as necessary.
- Review and analyze proposed ordinance changes affecting criminal prosecution.
- Monitor changes in state and local laws that impact prosecution practices and recommend or implement adjustments to policies and procedures as appropriate.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES
- Knowledge of relevant principles of criminal law, constitutional law, applicable codes, and regulations.
- Understanding of federal, state, and local criminal procedures, as well as municipal law.
- Ability to accurately interpret and apply federal, state, and local laws, regulations, and policies.
- Strong verbal and written communication skills, with the ability to convey information clearly and concisely.
- Ability to comprehend and follow both oral and written instructions effectively.
QUALIFICATIONS FOR THE JOB
Required:
An active Wyoming State Bar license.
Preferred:
One (1) to ten (3) years of increasingly responsible experience in the practice of law.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee must maintain effective auditory and visual perception necessary for observing surroundings, reading and writing, and communicating clearly with others. The employee must also maintain the physical ability to operate assigned equipment, walk, stand, kneel, bend repeatedly, and sit for extended periods. The position may occasionally require lifting or carrying objects weighing up to 30 pounds.
Working Environment:
Work is performed in a professional office setting, requiring close collaboration with others both within and outside the City Attorney’s Office. The position involves regular use of a computer, telephone, and other standard office equipment.
