Pay Rate:
$51,870 - $82,992 annually plus benefits  
The initial compensation for this position generally falls between $51,870 and $54,463.50, contingent upon relevant experience and qualifications.

Job Summary:

Develops and sustains a compelling positive vision for systemwide programs, services, and special projects for children and teens; supports and serves as advocate for Summer Reading, Battle of the Books, and Teen Services teams; presents public programs; trains staff on best practices for serving children, teens, and their caregivers based on current research and practice; represents CCPL at local, state, and national forums as an expert on youth services; performs other duties as assigned.

 

This position is located at the Mount Airy Branch of CCPL. Approximately 60% of the work is dedicated to supporting systemwide activities and 40% in support of branch activities.

 

Essential Functions:

  1. Works with the Director of Public Services and other staff to set goals, priorities, and quality standards systemwide for public programs for children and teens. Evaluates the success of programing for children and teens by analyzing data, tracking statistics, and preparing reports.
  2. Works with the Training and Staff Development Manager to develop and deliver systemwide staff training on serving children and teens that is based on current early literacy and education research, trends, and practice.
  3. Serves as CCPL’s primary point of contact at a systemwide level with Carroll County Public Schools to support the Learning Advantage Partnership. Maintains regular communication with the CCPS Supervisor of Library Media.
  4. Builds and maintains relationships with community partners who share a common mission in serving children and teens. Attends community meetings. Composes and delivers presentations on CCPL’s children and teen programming.
  5. Participates as CCPL’s representative on the Maryland State Library Agency’s Youth Services Coordinators community of practice and attends meetings.
  6. Participates in meetings of CCPL’s Children’s Services Supervisors. Collaborates with other CCPL teams, committees, workgroups, and affinity groups as appropriate and attends meetings.
  7. Maintains knowledge of collections and current literature, concentrating on the children’s and teen collections. Collaborates with the Materials Department and Outreach Department on developing and maintaining collections related to serving children and teens.
  8. Collaborates with branch staff, facilities staff, and Executive Leadership Team on developing and maintaining welcoming spaces for children and teens.
  9. Manages budgets and works with Development and Community Engagement Manager to manage grants related to serving children and teens.
  10. Presents storytimes and other programs, including set-up and tear-down.
  11. Prepares and presents programming to schools, community organizations, and at community events, such as book talks, story times, and other activities.
  12. Greets customers and responds to information, circulation, reference, and reader’s advisory requests using model reference and reader’s advisory behaviors. Maintains current knowledge of information resources and search tools to assist customers. Analyzes customers’ questions to decide search strategy and use appropriate information resources to meet customer needs.
  13. Uses current knowledge of Library related technology to assist and instruct customers and perform basic troubleshooting.
  14. Manages multiple customers simultaneously while providing exemplary customer service.
  15. Processes customers’ requests for materials. Registers customers for programs.
  16. Communicates library policies and procedures to customers as appropriate.
  17. Performs other duties as assigned.

 

Qualifications

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  1. Ability to train and evaluate the work of others.
  2. Ability to act as a representative of CCPL to the public. Excellent communication skills, including public speaking.
  3. Ability to establish and maintain effective relationships with community organizations, including schools, day cares, etc.
  4. Knowledge of all CCPL policies, procedures, and guidelines.
  5. Ability to maintain Maryland Library Associate continuing education requirements.
  6. Familiarity with relevant computer equipment and associated software applications.
  7. Ability to develop, present, and evaluate programs.
  8. Knowledge of the principles and practices of reference and reader’s advisory services.
  9. Current knowledge of information sources and search tools.
  10. Knowledge of the principles and practices of collection development and maintenance.
  11. Ability to manage concurrent multiple projects and priorities with competing deadlines.
  12. Commitment to excellent internal and external customer service.

 

 

 Education and Experience:

  1. Bachelor’s degree is required.
  2. Master’s degree from an ALA-Accredited program in Library and Information Studies, Education, or related field of study is preferred.
  3. Non-MLIS applicants - Requires 90 contact hours of approved in-service training through Library Associate Training Institute (LATI) within first 2 years of employment or 9 hours of formal academic course work in library science.
  4. Three or more years of experience working with children.
