SCHOOL OVERVIEW
Vaughn Next Century Learning Center (“Vaughn”), located in Pacoima, is a large urban public school within the Los Angeles Unified School District (LAUSD). Since the early 1970s, low student achievement had been a pattern. In 1993, tired of being helpless and hopeless, Vaughn became the first conversion charter school in the nation and was authorized by LAUSD. The charter was renewed most recently in 2018. Vaughn has over 30 years of experience as a successful independent charter school serving the district’s low-income students. This previously failing elementary public school is now a full-service, community-based, K-12th charter school that assures all students are college/career ready, digitally literate, and globally competent.
DESCRIPTION
Under the direction of the Director of Elementary Instruction, and in cooperation with site administrator(s), the Itinerant Theater/Dance Teacher will be responsible for implementing a well-planned and developmentally appropriate theater program according to the California Visual and Performing Arts Framework. The teacher will integrate the use of high-quality theater/dance education into the 2-5 curriculum.
FUNCTIONAL RESPONSIBILITIES INCLUDE

Provide pull out Theatre/Dance instruction to students in grades 2--5 on a rotational basis.

Utilize a variety of instructional skills and methods; vary instructional modes to accommodate student needs, interests, learning styles, and ability levels; provide opportunity for student inquiry and problem solving.

Select appropriate learning materials; utilize appropriate materials for the learning task; assist students in understanding the relationship of materials to concepts to be learned.

Monitor and evaluate student progress; check progress of individual student achievement frequently; evaluate results and adjust the learning process as needed; provide timely feedback to students and parents.

Maintain appropriate classroom control; show respect for students and their ideas; encourage participation consistent with objectives of the lesson; promote recognition of others’ rights and ideas; counsel with students displaying inappropriate behavior or performance; direct the activities of the class appropriate to learning tasks.

Demonstrate knowledge of Theatre/Dance subject matter; present lessons with a clear and logical structure; assist students in understanding relationships of Theatre/Dance concepts; display skill in making lessons interesting; stay abreast of current trends in subject matter.

Establish appropriate relationships with students; actively interact with students; demonstrate enthusiasm, intellectual stimulation, and organization.

Help to develop each student’s self-image; respect the dignity of each student; strive to develop positive student attitudes of self-worth and confidence.

Assist students in setting and achieving goals; assure that students are knowledgeable of the objective of the lesson being taught; communicate with students about their achievement and goals; offer specific guidance and suggestions that aid students in the process of achieving goals.

Provide for student growth and enrichment; set standards which are challenging and attainable; provide for opportunity of transfer of learning and application of required skills; assist students in understanding and developing healthy peer relationships.

Take all necessary and reasonable precautions to protect students and to ensure the care and protection of school property.

Maintain cooperative, professional attitudes with peers, supervisors and parents.

Assist in upholding and enforcing school rules, administrative regulations, and Board policies.

Attend and participate in staff meetings; cooperate with other members of the staff in planning instructional goals, objectives, and methods.

Work to establish and maintain open lines of communication with students and their parents concerning student progress.

Prepare students for at least one showcase per semester

Maintain an up-to-date online gradebook with feedback for students on progress

Establish positive guidance techniques rather than negative methods to correct and influence student behavior

Establishes and maintains standards of student behavior needed to achieve an effective learning environment in the classroom.
