General Function:

Under the general supervision of the Hunger Relief Manager and working collaboratively with Hunger Relief team members, the HRC is responsible for all Hunger Relief efforts at 3 community school sites, including family and community engagement, family cooking kits, training and supervision of adult and student volunteers and interns, and AmeriCorps supervision. The HRC will work collaboratively with partners and donors to bolster hunger relief efforts at all community school sites.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Serve as the lead or co-lead at 3 school-based food distributions, including placing weekly food orders and coordinating all aspects of delivery, setup and distribution
  • Co-coordinate all aspects of culturally-responsive family cooking kits for parents, guardians, and students at 6 school sites, including developing recipes, shopping, registering families, and delivering kits
  • Plan and lead 2 family cooking workshops at school sites under the Hunger Relief grant. Collaborate with school and SUN staff to coordinate recruitment and registration of families.
  • Use the MFS Food Pantry cargo van on occasion to pick up additional food purchases and donations
  • Train and coordinate on-site volunteers and AmeriCorps members to assist in food pantry deliveries, setup, and distributions. Conduct food safety and civil rights trainings with program volunteers yearly and track and report on volunteer hours
  • Coordinate lead volunteer stipend program at assigned sites, including meeting regularly with volunteers and providing documentation for hours served and projects completed
  • Work collaboratively with team members, principals, SUN site managers, clients, and volunteers determine the best methods for reaching vulnerable populations and increasing access to food resources
  • Provide information and assist with linkage to broader community and social service resources, including those in the SUN Service System
  • Work with team members to plan end of year volunteer appreciation events, including food, entertainment, volunteer recognition, and childcare
  • Support clients, staff, and volunteers when conflicts arise in the pantry space, and maintain a welcoming positive experience for the community
  • Assure that outreach materials are translated into multiple languages whenever possible and that these languages are applicable to the clients served
  • Work with the HRC to assure all school staff and clients are notified of closures and changes in the schedule
  • Keep temperature logs, monitor food shelf dates, and keep all areas food safe and in compliance with OFB and MFS policies, keep pantry spaces clean and organized, and meet with OFB’s compliance staff once per year at each school site
  • Maintain MFS confidentiality policies and respect the privacy of participating families
  • Complete site OFB reports, and assist with any additional data collection, tracking, and reporting as needed, including proper data entry in Link2Feed
  • Effectively and consistently market the organization, communicating about MFS and its programs in a way that is both compelling and on message. Follow marketing guidelines in place when communicating with staff, volunteers, clients, partners, and potential supporters
  • Comply with Metropolitan Family Service policies and procedures as outlined in the Employee and Supervisory Handbooks

Qualifications

Preferred Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Ability to effectively communicate in another language besides English. Preferred languages for this position are: Spanish, Cantonese, Russian, Vietnamese, Burmese, or Nepali
  • Experience working with families in an enriching, positive manner
  • Experience working in public school settings
  • Experience in community and donor outreach
  • Willingness to ask questions and seek clarification when needed

Education and Experience Requirements:

  • Minimum of high school diploma or GED, college coursework in public service, or human services related field; or relevant and equivalent experience
  • Experience working with families and individuals experiencing food insecurity is preferred
  • Must hold a valid state of residence Driver’s License and have a clean DMV driving record
  • Experience driving a cargo van is strongly preferred
  • Computer proficiency and knowledge of Microsoft Excel, Word, and Google applications (Gmail, Google Suite)
  • A Food Handlers’ Card valid in Multnomah and Clackamas counties will be required at time of employment. Further food safety training may be required by partner organizations

Other Requirements:

Personal transportation allowing for travel within the Portland Metropolitan area in a timely manner. If driving a personal vehicle must maintain a valid driver license for the state of residency, personal auto liability insurance coverage and a driving record permitting coverage under the agency auto liability policy.

MFS requires all employees and volunteers to complete a criminal background check which includes a fingerprint background check. We review the results of all background checks individually and consider all of the circumstances of any issues that arise in a background check during the hiring process.

Work Environment:

Work is normally performed in a school and warehouse setting, and at multiple sites. May require occasional early morning, weekend or evening work. Position requires use of computer, telephone, fax machine, copier, and may require accessing locations by use of stairs. This position requires the ability to lift up to 50 pounds on a regular basis and to move high volumes of food in an average workday. Position requires ability to drive cargo van and navigate through urban traffic areas safely. Must be able to regularly perform the following activities: bend, stretch, squat and twist while lifting or carrying items and moving in a safe manner. Must practice safe lifting techniques at all times. Repetitive heavy lifting will be required.
