R&M Apprentice Lineman

Summary/Objective 

This position will perform overhead and underground electric line construction and maintenance, as well as the operation and maintenance of equipment under the direction of a Journeyman Lineman and/or Line Foreman. Responsibilities include, but are not limited to, driving trucks, operating equipment, loading and unloading material, climbing poles, and working from aerial personnel lift devices. Have all tools that are not provided by the company to complete job tasks.

DUTIES/RESPONSIBILITIES

• You are a designated competent person for your crew; you must be able to identify hazards and take corrective actions when necessary.
• Have a basic understanding and knowledge of power line construction, re-conducting, conversions, transformer connections and specs.
• Able to perform entry-level lineman duties while under the close supervision of a Journeyman Lineman.
• Drive utility vehicles (CDL drivers only); while following operating instructions, safety standards,
• guidelines, and DOT responsibilities.
• Must be able to operate all safety equipment and initiate emergency action plans if necessary.
• Will be expected to perform pole top rescue when needed from a pole or utilizing the lower controls of a bucket.
• Will be expected to perform CPR if called upon.
• Has overall responsibility for the safety and performance of crew.
• Attention and care are required to prevent injury to others when performing all essential functions.
• Must be familiar with all host utility specifications.
• Must be able to climb poles/structures while using 100% fall protection.
• Must understand and have knowledge of assigned PPE and how and when to use it.
• Must take direction and learn safe and productive work practices from journeyman lineman.
• Should consider the Apprenticeship Program as positions become available.
• Assist the other crew members in the construction, modification, or demolition of overhead electrical lines.
• Helps assemble material and frame poles and prepare electrical equipment to be installed.
• Climbs poles to construct, modify, or remove wire and/or electrical equipment such as transformers, security lighting, and electrical conductors.       
• Climbs poles to assist a bucket operator in constructing, modifying or removing wire and/or electrical equipment such as transformers, interrupters, capacitor banks, security lighting, and electrical conductors.
• Install, repair, or replace open wire secondaries and services.
• Help to maintain or clean up a work area to ensure no hazards exist during construction.
• Begin operation of specific equipment such as Line Trucks, Buckets, Rope, and Wire machines.
• Begin the operation of Backyard machines.

EDUCATION/POSITION REQUIREMENTS

• High school diploma or GED
• Valid CDL driver’s license with Class A endorsement (or ability to obtain within 6 months of employment)

Minimum Requirements

• Pass pre-employment, random, post-accident, and reasonable suspicion drug screens
• Satisfactory results of pre-employment background check results
• A valid driver’s license with a clean driving record is required.
• Must be able and willing to obtain Basic First Aid and CPR Certification (company-provided)
• Must be willing to assist in any task that needs to be completed on the project.
• Must be open to extended times away from home and working holidays.
• Customer and labor-effective communication.
• Understand and follow all assigned job tasks.
• Organizational skills.   
• Ability to follow specific job requirements and recognize potential dangers.
• Work extended and irregular hours to restore service.
• Travel long distances when needed; work out of town and/or state when necessary.
• Work in inclimate weather conditions

EQUIPMENT/TOOL REQUIREMENTS

• Climbing Tools including but not limited to: Climbing Belt, 100% approved fall protection safety, secondary lanyard, Climbers (Hooks), basic Lineman hand tools.

Due to the nature and scope of the essential functions, the importance of personal interactions with coworkers and members of the public, and the availability of job-related tools, equipment, and resources at work, the performance of the essential functions requires regular, consistent availability, accessibility, and presence on-site.

A minimum of 40 hours/week may be required to efficiently perform the job duties of this position, including presence at designated internal and external meetings. This position may also require availability and accessibility to respond to and address emergencies and critical situations outside of regular business operating hours in the evenings and/or during weekends.

Environmental & Physical Conditions

The work environment conditions described here represent those an employee encounters while performing the essential functions of this position. This position works primarily in the field and is exposed to all weather conditions, including temperature extremes and rainy environments. The outdoor setting involves all types of property and site conditions, including open spaces, timberlands, urban developments, flat and hilly terrain, building construction sites, and road rights-of-way.
