Production Brewer

 JOB SUMMARY: 

A production brewer at Half Acre Beer Co. is a qualified brewer who can execute shift work on our brewhouse. The brewer will primarily be responsible for all aspects of wort production on our 30 bbl Braukon brewhouse. This position will also have a goal of full cross-training in the cellar. This individual will operate with a critical focus on safety, cleanliness, organization, consistency, and quality. Shifts will primarily be Monday – Friday with a Sunday – Thursday shift shared via rotation amongst all brewers. Shift timing will rotate on a routine schedule, with first shift starting at 5:00am and last shift ending around 9:00pm. 

DUTIES/RESPONSIBILITIES 

  • Grain loading and milling 

  • Mashing 

  • Lautering 

  • Graining out 

  • Boiling 

  • Hop additions 

  • Wort cooling 

  • Wort aeration 

  • Hot side gravity and pH measurements 

  • Calculations and on the fly process/recipe adjustment 

  • Brewhouse equipment CIP 

  • Boiler and water management 

  • Facilitate dry grain silo fills 

  • Facilitate spent grain silo emptying 

  • Beer carbonation, including operation of Anton Paar CBOX and Zahm 

  • Gravity, pH, and temperature readings during fermentation 

  • Operation of infusion tank for adding specialty ingredients 

  • Spirit barrel work, including prepping, filling, and emptying barrels 

  • Communicating well with other brewing, cellaring, and packaging staff 

  • General equipment maintenance and regular cleaning of work areas 

  • Tracking of all production stages with OrchestratedBEER 

  • Potential for full cellar duty training and rotation 

Qualifications

REQUIRED SKILLS/ABILITIES: 

  • Wort production 

  • Fermentation management 

  • Sanitary technique  

  • Mechanically-minded 

  • Organizational skills 

  • Reliable, punctual, and efficient 

  • Strong critical thinking with the ability to assess and solve issues 

  • Tuned in to the critical factors that dictate beer quality

EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE:  

  • A minimum of one year experience with brewing and/or cellaring in a fast-paced brewery environment 

  • Experience working with brewhouse automation a plus 

  • Experience working with OrchestratedBEER a plus  

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS: 

  • Must be able to lift 55 lbs. overhead 

  • Must be able to maneuver equipment in tight spaces 

  • Must be able to maneuver 165 lb kegs on the floor 

  • Must be able to work on your feet for 8+ hours at time 

  • Must be able to work in tight spaces where twisting, reaching, and climbing is required
