Intro/Program Description: The Stanley M. Isaacs Neighborhood Center (Isaacs Center) is a non-profit, multi-service organization that is focused on the needs of children and low-income families, out-of-school and out-of-work youth, and aging New Yorkers at 5 locations located in Upper Manhattan (Yorkville and East Harlem.) In addition, as a Meals on Wheels pioneer since 1964, Isaacs Center is responsible for the preparation and delivery of more than 1,000 meals per day to the isolated and homebound through the operation of a food and nutrition program that includes a community kitchen, food pantry, and a delivery service (by foot and truck)

 

Purpose of Position: The primary function of the Group Leader is to plan group activities that provide a safe and engaging learning environment to the participants of the Stanley M. Isaacs Beacon program The program is delivered through a comprehensive menu of services including project based learning that integrate education enrichment, visual arts, clubs, trips, and sports.

 

Schedule: Mon, Tues, Weds & Fri 2:00 pm to 6:00 pm, Thurs 2:00 pm to 8:00 pm

 

Hourly Rate: $17.00

 

 

Roles, Responsibilities, and Essential Duties

  • Foster a learning environment that stimulates children’s creative growth and development that is clean and safe.
  • Demonstrate professionalism & leadership.
  • Take daily attendance
  • Maintain sound supervision and ensuring the safety of program participants at all times.
  • Deliver educational programs collaborating with DOE teachers.
  • Deliver recreational and cultural programs to develop community and explore the summer theme through art, games, and a performance project.
  • Supervise youth and participate in all activities by building positive relationships with youth and peers, serving as a role model with respect to demeanor, communication, behavior and the organization’s mission, philosophy, and goals.
  • Work with children on developmental and emotional issues; encourage program participation and social skills development.
  • Display or provide opportunity to exhibit children’s work.
  • Teach and supervise organized games and assist the activity specialist, escort groups to and from activity areas and field trips.
  • Enforce program rules, identify & respond to participant behavior issues, and carry out corrective action when needed by identifying and seeking to resolve conflicts and behavioral problems.
  • Communicate with parents about participant’s experiences and report concerns to Program Director.

 

Qualifications/Educational Requirements

  • High School Diploma/GED; Some college preferred.
  • Must be knowledgeable and have prior experience successfully teaching and instructing youth.
  • Minimum of two years of work-related skill, knowledge, or experience is required.
  • Must have ability to work collaboratively.
  • Must have passion for the mission and demonstrated interest in the field of education and youth development.
  • Must have a sense of humor and a passion for youth development.
  • Must be able to pass background check including a Fingerprint Screen, Sex Offender Registry and be physically able to work with children (via a doctor’s signed consent including TB screening).
  • CPR/First Aid Certification a plus

 

Skills, Knowledge and Abilities

  • Must be able to follow curriculum.
  • Must be responsible, reliable and punctual!
  • Create and able to implement plans for group participation.
  • Effectively supervise children.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills required.

 

Physical Requirements

  • Frequent bending, kneeling, walking

 

Work Environment:

  • Outdoors/Indoors
  • Supervision in water during swimming activities
