Position Summary 
This non-tenure track position is a faculty member with undergraduate teaching expertise in public health, and scholarly expertise in a field related to public health, who will also support Salem’s health-related academic programs. The Assistant Professor of Public Health will demonstrate a commitment to educating a diverse student body and facilitating efforts in diversity, equity, and inclusion.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Standard teaching load of seven courses per year, which may include:
  • PUBH 100: Introduction to Public Health
  • PUBH 225: Environmental Health
  • PUBH 230: Gender, Sexuality and Health
  • PUBH 260: Introduction to Global Health
  • PUBH 350: Administration and Leadership of Public Health Organizations
  • PUBH 370: Internship in Public Health
  • One-course release in the first year of employment
  • Support students’ independent studies and advise/mentor students
  • Engage students in scholarly research and community-based partnerships
  • Work on other teaching and learning projects as needs and interests arise
  • Participate in service to the Public Health Program, the Natural Sciences and Mathematics Division, and the College, including committee membership
     

Qualifications

Required Qualifications

  • PhD or DrPH in Public Health or closely related discipline. Applicants with an MPH and a doctoral degree in a related discipline will be considered. 
  • Experience teaching various public health courses as the instructor of record within a higher education setting; faculty with expertise in environmental health or global health are especially encouraged to apply
  • Experience mentoring undergraduate and/or graduate students
  • Active record and program of scholarship
  • Demonstrated commitment to teaching excellence and innovation at the undergraduate level, including active learning and engagement of students with diverse cultural and linguistic backgrounds
  • Excellent interpersonal and English communication skills – in the classroom, with colleagues, in written work, and in listening
  • Demonstrated ability to engage in innovative projects involving students

Preferred Qualifications

  • At least three years of undergraduate teaching experience as the instructor of record
  • Experience teaching courses in environmental health, global health, administration and leadership in public health, and public health internship and capstone  
  • Experience teaching undergraduate courses in conservation biology, ecology, and/or geographic information systems
  • Experience with course and curriculum development
  • Experience in the intersection of environmental studies and public health or health science and public health
  • Experience supporting an environmental health minor


Physical Functions
While performing the responsibilities of the Assistant Professor of Public Health, the employee is required to sit for varying lengths of time; occasionally stand, walk, and kneel and regularly ascend/descend stairs; use hands and fingers to handle or feel and manipulate keys on a keyboard; perform extended periods of work at a computer workstation, view a computer monitor; perceive sounds at normal speaking levels with or without correction, and receive detailed information through oral communication; express and exchange ideas by means of spoken word; and work in an office setting.
