Description

Under the direction of the Shop Supervisor, the Mechanic will perform a range of duties and responsibilities on Alexandria Transit Company’s (ATC) fleet vehicles that can differ from day to day including routine maintenance work to specialized repairs.  This position is evening or night shift.  Starting hourly salary for a Mechanic B is $29.78.


This position performs journeyman level repairs, maintenance and modification on all DASH vehicles and related equipment. The B Mechanic reads and understand diagnostic’s, repair / service procedure manuals and applies such knowledge to repair tasks. This position frequently uses laptops and related technology to perform vehicle diagnosis and to perform scheduled maintenance. Upon completion of repairs, the B Mechanic test drives vehicles to ensure proper performance and completeness of repair.

Responsibilities include but are not limited to:

  • Performs all levels of Preventative Maintenance Inspection on all DASH vehicles.
  • Performs all levels of unscheduled repairs on all DASH vehicles, diagnosing equipment for proper repairs.
  • Requests and orders required parts for repairs and maintenance.
  • Opens work-orders for all repairs or services / inspections.
  • Test drives vehicles for verification of proper operation prior to and upon completion of repairs.
  • Follows established procedures / OEM procedures for all maintenance/repairs.
  • Works independently while performing job duties.
  • Reads and understands repair manuals.
  • Reads and understands wiring schematics.
  • Uses computers daily for work-orders and looking up equipment.
  • Assists other mechanics when necessary.
  • Uses hand tools, pneumatic tools and hydraulic tools including ancillary shop equipment daily.
  • Makes road calls or service calls.
  • Performs related tasks and duties as required.

Qualifications

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

  • Possess a complete set of mechanic tools.
  • Must be proficient in the use of computers.
  • Knowledge of electrical wiring fundamentals.
  • Ability to read manuals and schematics.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with others.
  • Ability to communicate effectively both verbally and in writing.
  • Ability to make independent decisions within scope of responsibility.

  • Deal with the public on a secondary basis
  • Greet and meet with visitors, clearly disseminate information to others

Physically:

  • Constantly moves about and works in varying weather conditions
  • Ability to moves throughout facilities and grounds
  • Ability to work on the road in varying weather conditions assisting in maintenance operations
  • Ability to lift at least 60 lb., occasionally.
  • Ability to be nimble and work in confined spaces

 

Additional/Miscellaneous/Special Requirements:

  • Possesses or ability to obtain a Class B (Passenger and Air-Brake endorsement) Commercial Driver’s License with P endorsement within 60 days of hire.
  • Must successfully complete and pass: criminal background and child protective services check upon hire and must be maintained throughout employment.
  • Must successfully complete and pass drug screen testing upon hire and as regularly required by policy for position.

 

Education and Experience:

  • High school diploma or GED required.
  • Relevant technical school training is beneficial but not required.
  • Minimum two (2) years of vehicle maintenance or mechanic experience required. Diesel mechanic experience is preferred.
  • Extensive experience may be considered in lieu of educational background.
