Job Summary: 

 

The Adventure Program Director is responsible for assisting the Camp Director in the   designing, planning, staffing and instructing camp program including but not limited to High and Low Ropes, slingshots, archery, and hatchet throwing. The Adventure Program Director ensures that all adventure programs including but not limited to High and Low Ropes and shooting sports activities occur in a safe and age-appropriate manner. The Adventure Program Director will assist the Camp Director in the day-to-day management of the overall camp program through daily contact with counselors, CITs, Unit Leaders and program staff as well as through other duties at the direction of the Camp Director.  

 

 

Essential Job Duties and Responsibilities: (Additional duties may be assigned) 

 

  • Attend all staff training weeks.  

  • Participate in the planning and conducting of pre-camp training.  

  • Assist the Counselors in creating the weekly schedule for each unit, ensuring brochure content and girl planning occurs.  

  • Assist the Camp Director in the creation of weekly schedules and rosters for campers and staff members, including units, breaks, and all activities.  

  • Maintaining in-depth knowledge about the facility and its emergency action plan; ensure proper safety procedures are followed and activate the emergency action plan when necessary; respond to on-site incidents and accidents.  

  • Follow reporting procedures to the Camp Director and GSNYPENN Director of Outdoor Experience.  

  • Utilize CPR and First Aid training as necessary.  

  • Maintain an understanding of NYS Department of Health standards, Girl Scouts Safety Activity Checkpoints, American Camp Association Standards, and ACCT safety requirements as pertaining to the program areas.  

  • Acting as a leader and role model to other staff members through enthusiastic participation in all camp programming, utilizing excellent customer service skills, maintaining a professional demeanor and positive, upbeat disposition, maintaining the tenets of the Girl Scout Law, and communicating with other staff members in a way that is positive and encouraging.  

  • Assist the Camp Director in overseeing any day-to-day operations such as food services, health services, programs, human resource matters, interaction with parents, and camper/staff supervision. 

  • Drive camp vehicles upon request of the Camp Director, to include camp errands and/or trips to obtain medical services.  

  • Cover unit staff evenings off as requested.  

  • Assist with check in and check out procedures.   

  • Assist with weekly camp clean up, including sweeping, mopping, sanitizing, trash pick-up, etc.  

  • Serve as on-site weekend supervisor one or more weekends during the camp season, specifically weekends where CITs are on site, which will require permission from parents if there are any off site excursions planned for that time.   

  • Fills in for Camp Director as needed.  

  • Oversee the Shooting Sports program area and all shooting sports equipment; ensure the shooting sports program area is stocked with all supplies necessary to run program. Inform Camp Director of program supplies needed on a regular basis.  

  • Oversee the High/Low ropes program area and equipment; ensure the area is clear and safe for use and equipment is maintained for safety.  

  • Maintaining in-depth knowledge about the shooting sports facility and the high/low ropes facility and its emergency action plan; ensure proper safety procedures are followed at all shooting sport ranges and utilized first aid when necessary.   

  • Maintain an understanding of NYS Department of Health standards and Girl Scouts Safety Activity Checkpoints safety requirements as pertaining to shooting sports and high/low ropes. 

  • Set up and clean up the shooting ranges prior to and after daily usage, ensuring daily logs are maintained, and that equipment is in good working order; maintain organization of shooting sports equipment and shed.  

  • Deliver robust and engaging programming as promised in the summer camp brochure. 

  • Assist the Program Manager and/or Assistant Camp Director in the creation of all-camp and weekly unit activities as assigned.

Supervisory Responsibilities: 

The Adventure Program Director assists the Camp Director and Leadership Program Director in moderating the performance of Counselors and supervising the Counselors, CITs and Program Staff. 

The salary range for this position is $600 - $800 per week.

Qualifications

Minimum Qualification Standards: 

 

  • Be at least 21 years of age. 

  • Ability to schedule and supervise staff; supervisory experience helpful. 

  • Believe in the Girl Scout mission. 

  • Have training and/or experience working with children in an outdoor setting preferred, but not necessary. 

  • Experience with archery, hatchet throwing and High/Low ropes course preferred. 

  • Possess good character, integrity, patience, sense of humor, enthusiasm, and willingness to be a part of the camp community. 

  • Skills related to lesson planning and implementation, such as: time management, creativity, flexibility, and public speaking skills. 

  • A GSNYPENN approved archery and tomahawk training, or willingness to obtain. 

  • Current First Aid and CPR training, or willingness to obtain during pre-camp training. 

  • “Stop The Bleed”, Wilderness First Aid or comparable training that includes tourniquet training.  

  • Drive camp vehicles as needed (Golf Cart, 12 passenger vans, etc.)   

 
 
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:   

 

  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills. 

  • Strong organizational skills including the ability to manage multiple projects and details simultaneously. 

  • Possess good character, integrity, patience, sense of humor, enthusiasm, a high level of flexibility, and willingness to be a part of the camp community. 

  • Ability to work productively in a fast paced, stressful environment. 

 

Physical and Mental Requirements: 

 

Light mental and visual attention required for performing work where there is some variety but actions taken and decisions made are limited to few possibilities. Work requires some coordination with others.  

 

Physical Exertion: 

 

  • Prolonged standing, bending, stooping, walking long distances, hiking, climbing, and stretching 

  • Moderate lifting (up to 50 pounds) 

  • Walking on uneven terrain and hills 

  • Endurance to meet emergency needs 

  • Ability (and willingness) to live in a camp setting and work irregular hours
