Description

The Accessibility Coordinator ensures students with disabilities have equal access to University programs, facilities, activities, and services in compliance with the Americans with Disabilities Act and amendments, Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act; and other applicable state and federal laws. The Accessibility Coordinator is responsible for reviewing, interpreting, and evaluating documentation and diagnostic information to determine reasonable accommodations for students with varying disabilities. In addition, this position is responsible for collaborating with faculty and staff to provide accommodations, improve accessibility, and promote an inclusive learning environment.

 

  • Determines eligibility and identifies suitable and reasonable accommodations under federal law by engaging in an interactive process with students with disabilities.
  • Reviews and interprets medical, neuropsychological and psychological diagnostic reports and other third-party documentation.
  • Determines and provide appropriate academic, housing, and dietary accommodations and services in a timely manner. Engage in the interactive process with faculty to implement appropriate accommodations and services as needed.
  • Educates students in self-advocacy to help implement reasonable accommodations; promote awareness of the department's services; develop/maintain knowledge of disability law practices and issues related to ADA and Section 504 compliance
  • Collaborates and coordinates with faculty and other administrative areas, including Residential Life, Rudin Academic Resource Center, Gabelli Center for Teaching & Learning to meet the needs of students with disabilities.
  • Ensures accurate data management and use of reporting tools Utilizes data to inform decision-making and program improvements
  • Acts as a liaison between disabled students and faculty to ensure the implementation of reasonable accommodations 
  • Meet regularly with the Director of Student Access to discuss ongoing projects, student needs, and departmental goals.
  • Develop and implement programs and workshops related to disability topics to increase awareness as well as promote better understanding of the department's role and use of resources to provide access
  • Attends the workplace as scheduled, reports to work punctually, and follows a work schedule to keep up with the demands of the workplace
  • Plan and execute department involvement in Open Houses, Orientation events, and panels to represent ASO to the Iona University community. Represents the ASO at campus events such as Orientations, Graduation services and information fairs.

Qualifications

Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

  • Minimum 2-3 years of experience working with students with disabilities at the post-secondary level.
  • Bachelor's degree in education, counseling, and disability services required; Master's degree preferred.
  • Working knowledge of various disabilities and disability laws (ADA, Section 504, Fair Housing Act, etc.) as they pertain to higher education and students with disabilities
  • Working knowledge and use of Assistive Technology
  • Experience making accommodation decisions
  • Excellent communication skills, coupled with good judgment, are essential
  • Familiarity with effective accommodations and supports for college students with disabilities.
  • Must be willing to take the initiative on tasks and set priorities and to multitask as needed
  • Demonstrated technical expertise and passion for customer service and problem-solving
  • Ability to assess and analyze data to assist the Director of ASO in creating reports to measure outcomes and effectiveness
  • Committed to continuous disability training and professional development to enhance student services
  • Skilled with computerized systems, use of Canva, spreadsheet and presentation software
  • Experience with Accommodate Software a plus
