Position Summary

 

The Chief Programs Officer (CPO) is the lead architect and executor of Joybound’s animal/human wellbeing programs. Reporting directly to the Chief Executive Officer (CEO), the CPO partners with Joybound’s leadership team to advance the organization’s mission, vision, values, strategic goals, and annual plans. With input from Joybound’s CEO and C-Team members, the CPO defines key program performance indicators, milestones, and quality benchmarks to guide efforts and assess success; designs and implements strategy and tactics to meet and exceed KPIs; and expands organizational impact and reputation for excellence in the animal wellbeing and service animal sectors. The CPO provides inspirational leadership to a high-performing team of dedicated program staff and to the organization as a whole, while also serving as an innovative national voice, shaping human-animal bond initiatives, policies, and practices

 

Key Responsibilities

 

I.  Leadership

 

  • Demonstrate commitment and passion for the human-animal bond, with the ability to inspire teams, organizations, and communities toward a common goal.
  • Collaborate and build partnerships with diverse stakeholders, including governmental agencies, non-profit organizations, academia, industry leaders, and grassroots activists.
  • Lead by action and example to advance a culture of positivity, professionalism, trust, transparency, empathy, and excellence at Joybound.
  • Serve as a positive contributing member of Joybound’s C- and L-Teams to guide the organization’s strategic direction and tactical implementation.
  • Coach and guide program team members, providing ongoing direction, example, mentorship, resources, feedback, and accountability to elevate individual and team performance.
  • Advance Joybound’s strategic initiatives and annual goals through innovating program design, effective management, and vibrant cross-departmental collaboration.
  • Possess uncompromising ethical integrity and a commitment to upholding the highest standards of animal wellbeing and ethical conduct in all endeavors.
  • Maintain the ability to thrive in a dynamic and fast-paced environment, demonstrating resilience, flexibility, and adaptability in the face of challenges and setbacks

 

II.  Programs Management

 

  • Possess an in-depth knowledge of animal behavior, advancements in human- animal bond research, veterinary medicine, legislation, and regulatory frameworks related to animal wellbeing.
  • Achieve or exceed Joybound’s annual and strategic program goals, designing, assessing, and revising tactics as appropriate.
  • Co-create and monitor success measurements for Joybound programs to guide efforts and achieve high standards of success.
  • Oversee the development, prioritization, and implementation of program enhancements and/or expansion opportunities to drive meaningful change in industry practices and attitudes.
  • Co-create and oversee budget management, ensuring funds are appropriately stewarded and programs are supported with the tools, resources, systems, and expertise to achieve sustainable growth and improvement.
  • Assess program divisional operations, including risk management and contingency/emergency planning, to ensure operational excellence and sustainability.
  • Co-create and/or support workforce learning, vocational training, youth internships, humane education, and other educational opportunities as appropriate.
  • Collaborate with the IT team to maintain high-functioning Program software at Joybound.

 

III.  Advancement

 

  • Collaborate with the Advancement team and additional team members as appropriate to cultivate prospective and current corporate partners, foundation funders, individual donors, government officials, civic leaders, and/or the media to achieve Joybound’s revenue, recognition, and reputational goals.
  • Support the development of relevant proposals and reports; ensure proper application and stewardship of grants, gifts, program revenue, and other allocated resources.
  • Represent Joybound in the media and animal wellbeing and assistance dog sectors, serving as a speaker, leader, member, and/or presenter in broadcasts, publications, professional associations, conferences, advocacy groups, etc.

Qualifications

 

 

  • Demonstrated passion for Joybound’s mission, vision, values, and goals.
  • Bachelor’s degree, with major in nonprofit, public, or business administration preferred, or equivalent professional experience.
  • Minimum of ten years’ professional experience in animal wellbeing, with demonstrated success in program development, leadership, and management of multiple departments, direct reports, budgets, and partnerships.
  • Demonstrated senior executive leadership skills and qualities.
  • Demonstrated dedication to fostering a highly collaborative and transparent work environment.
  • Entrepreneurial and strategic approach to business planning and program development and implementation.
  • Robust skills in project and team management.
  • Ability to prioritize and delegate to multiple teams to achieve objectives on time, within budget, and to the highest standards of excellence.
  • Comfort with and commitment to working with diverse staff, volunteers, and community.
  • Demonstrated success coaching, mentoring, managing, and developing high performing individuals and teams to accelerate organizational growth and healthy evolution.
  • Exceptional written and verbal communication skills; sound judgment, calm demeanor, professional appearance, courteous and tactful discourse, exemplary business and personal ethics.
  • Competence with internet search tools, social media applications, and Microsoft Office or G-Suite
  • Must be an insured driver and possess a valid California Driver’s License with not more than two at-fault incidents in a three-year period and no major at-fault violations in the last ten years.
  • Must be willing to submit to a background check.

 

PHYSICAL/ENVIRONMENTAL REQUIREMENTS:

 

  • Willingness to accommodate animals in the workplace and work in an environment that includes constant exposure to animals and animal allergens.
  • Ability to lift and move items or animals weighing up to 40 pounds for short distances, and push/pull objects weighing up to 25 pounds.
  • Ability to sit for long periods while using a computer, kneel, bend, stoop, squat, reach above and below shoulder level, grasp and turn objects, stand and/or move frequently, flex the neck upward and downward, and twist the neck and the waist.
  • Tetanus and rabies inoculations are required or must be waived.
  • Attend events as needed, which may require driving an automobile.

 

HOURS:

  • Full-time exempt position requiring a minimum of 40 hours per week.
  • Hybrid work arrangements may be made, following role establishment.
  • Occasional evening and/or weekend work required.
