Solar Field Engineer

Greenscape Environmental Services is seeking a Solar Field Engineer Extern for the 2025 DC Sustainable Energy Utility (DCSEU) Summer 2025 Cohort. The program will run from Monday June 9th, 2015 through Friday, September 19, 2025. Twice a year, DCSEU connects District residents with 4-month paid green externships working with local contractors and organizations.

DCSEU links District residents who are new to the workforce, between jobs, or looking for a career change with local contractors, businesses, municipal agencies, and other key players in the green economy. The Workforce Development Program is designed to help prepare residents for shifting job markets and emerging green careers while increasing the capacity of local contractors and organizations working in the sustainable energy sector.

*4-MONTH ASSIGNMENT

The Solar Field Engineer will be responsible for designing PV systems for small-to-medium photovoltaic facilities with system sizes ranging from 5kW-1MW. Applications will vary across rooftop, green-field, and canopy solutions. The Solar Field Engineer must be a strong communicator, detail oriented with a strong knowledge basis in electrical theory and multiple power distribution voltages.

Duties & Responsibilities

Perform site survey/analysis to identify the constraints of a site to minimize project risks and opportunity cost

  • Create solar designs (drawings, documentation and submittals) based on appropriate system application using various value engineering tools for residential and commercial projects
  • Design monitoring systems
    Create system proposal designs and prepare accurate system performance calculations
    Synthesize all necessary information to develop cost effective and readily deployable PV designs
    Understand and utilize BOS components
  • Accurately model PV facility energy output estimates using PVSYST software or other accepted modeling tool
    Generate system specifications and prepare bid documents
  • Collaborate with Solar Project Manager and Team Leads to ensure that the design achieves the goals and timelines of the project
  • Generate system specifications and collaborate with Project Manager and Sales Team
  • Complete jobsite visits as required to evaluate site conditions, electrical tie-ins, and other items that will impact system design and constructability
  • Troubleshoot design and construction issues in the field
  • Interact with customers, engineers, project manager, etc. on a project-by-project basis to provide clarifications/detail on layouts
  • Perform electrical load and energy consumption analysis and utility rate structure analysis
    Prepare accurate system performance calculations
  • Research current and new design standards, codes, and methods of construction to assist in developing and improving design tools and systems
  • Coordinate with other design disciplines and consultants internally or externally
    Coordinate with multiple jurisdictions to meet their requirements
  • All other duties as assigned

Educational Background and Work Experience

Must have at least 3 years of experience as a designer or design engineer in the in Solar Industry Experience in permitting processes with local authorities having jurisdiction is preferred

• Strong knowledge of wide range of industry products

Experience with AutoCAD

Experience with photovoltaic performance modeling

Knowledge of National Electric Code

Previous experience managing projects from initial design to installation and execution is preferred

NABCEP PV Installation professional certification preferred

Experience in Microgrid design and integration is a plus

High School Diploma; equivalent combination of education and experience Valid Driver's License with acceptable driving record
