Role Summary:

Under the general supervision of the Assistant Team Leader, the Underwriter I makes quality decisions on consumer loan requests (direct/indirect) in accordance with Gesa’s underwriting standards or offers alternative solutions that best suit the applicant’s financial needs. This position is responsible for dealership outreach and development of dealership portfolios. This position is responsible to develop and maintain branch relationships. This position has intermediate to advanced, wide-range job knowledge of consumer lending. This position has demonstrated the ability to handle moderate responsibilities in addition to the Underwriter role.

 

What You Will Be Doing:

  1. Apply critical thinking skills and solid lending principles according to the needs of each applicant and their risk profile; construct and approve loan offers in accordance with delegated approval authority and loan policy under general guidance of a Senior Underwriter or Manager.
  2. Evaluates and mitigates risk while maintaining profitability associated with extending credit requests.
  3. Apply underwriting guidelines in making and defending loan decisions under moderate guidance of a Assistant Team Leader or Team Leader.
  4. Identify and recommend additional lending opportunities to increase relationships with members.
  5. Provide accurate pricing and terms to dealerships in a courteous/professional manner.
  6. Ensure compliance with legal requirements, lending regulations and internal policies and procedures.
  7. Maintain positive relationships with colleagues and business partners.
  8. Maintain the highest level of confidentiality relative to information received directly or indirectly.
  9. Adhere to all local, state, and federal laws/regulatory requirements as related to functional areas including Truth in Lending, Reg B, Reg Z, and Bank Secrecy Act.
  10. Maintain Awareness of laws, rules, regulations, and policies and procedures which impact position duties and responsibilities.
  11. Ability to analyze, research and resolve medium complexity problems under moderate guidance of an Assistant Team Leader or Team Leader.
  12. Develop knowledge and skills through formal training classes or on-the-job experience.
  13. Serve as resource or Subject Matter Expert for team.
  14. Display mutual respect, trust, and dignity, acting in the best interest of the credit union.  Lead by example by displaying solid ethics and integrity at all times.
  15. Ensure that all issues are handled in a fair, legal, and consistent manner.
  16. Perform other duties as assigned.

  1. To maintain up-to-date and comprehensive knowledge of all laws, credit union products, services, policies and procedures regarding areas of responsibility, and to remain highly tuned to the marketplace, member needs and patterns of external market changes.

  3. To effectively communicate and receive ideas and information, both orally and in writing. To effectively operate standard office equipment, computer and lending programs and programs related to areas of responsibility.

Qualifications

What You Will Need:

  1. High School degree, GED, or completion of a specialized course of study at a business or trade school; or equivalent experience.
  2. Zero to two years of similar or related exposure to indirect lending/financial services.
  3. Advanced knowledge of FICO preferred.
  4. Advanced knowledge of CUDL, Dealer Track and Route One programs preferred.
  5. A valid Driver’s License is required.
