Earlham College is seeking a Chemistry Laboratory Manager and Chemical Hygiene Officer to join our team!
Summary:
The Laboratory Manager is responsible for the overall organization and routine operation of the chemistry instructional laboratories. As the Chemical Hygiene Officer, this position focuses on the campus-wide management of chemical inventory, hazardous waste handling and disposal, and safety training.
Primary Duties & Responsibilities:
As the Chemistry Laboratory Manager:
- Coordinate, order, and manage the inventory of chemicals and supplies.
- Prepare materials (chemicals and specialty equipment) for assigned experiments in all courses.
- Supervise, train, and schedule student stockroom workers.
- Oversee the maintenance and use of laboratory instruments (e.g., FTIR, HPLC, AA, etc.).
- Work in collaboration with stockroom supervisors, and appropriate staff, to maintain an accurate and updated chemical inventory for the College.
- Conduct laboratory inspections periodically to ensure compliance.
- Maintain a Material Safety Data Sheet database.
- Proactively identify and attend appropriate training courses as needed (Laboratory Waste Management, Hazardous Material Training, Biosafety, etc.).
As the Chemical Hygiene Officer:
- Work with the faculty and administration to maintain and update a Chemical Hygiene Plan in compliance with the Occupational Safety and Health Act (OSHA).
- Conduct regular safety training for faculty, staff, and students working with and around hazardous chemicals in the workplace (training should include safe work practices, use of personal protective equipment, and procedures dealing with accidents involving toxic substances). Maintain centralized records documenting training. Ensure that staff and students understand the training received.
- Work with faculty to monitor safe use and disposal of chemicals.
- Investigate and complete a report for any incident involving chemicals or exposure on campus.
- Provide reports of chemical hygiene activities performed.
- Complete and annually refresh RCRA and hazmat shipping training.
- Learn and apply the contents of relevant regulations concerning chemical safety.
- Act as a resource for students, faculty, and staff on problems related to chemical safety.
- Perform required safety audits.
- Organize annual hazardous waste disposal.
