POSITION SUMMARY: Prepares and maintains a sterile surgical field and directly assists the surgeon in performing surgery.  In addition, the Tech will also clean, sterilize, and process instrumentation and perform other duties throughout the department as assigned. 

DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES:

Sets up tables, instruments and supplies required for specific operations. 

Assists in preparation and draping of patient and operative area. 

Prepares and passes instruments, sutures, sponges and supplies needed in the operative procedure. 

Certifies correct sponge count with the circulating nurse. 

Assists in maintenance and care of specimens and prepares surgical specimens and forms for laboratory analysis as needed.  

De-contaminates all equipment, instruments and supplies.

Observes strict sterile technique during operative procedures.  Communicates any infractions. 

Cleans carts and rooms and changes linen. 

Cleans and stocks storage room as required.  Knows where all equipment is located and how to operate it.

Assists with table equipment, positioning patients, application of plaster casts and dressings.

Prepares and maintains the sterile field for the surgical procedure.

Assists in discharging the patient from the operating room to the recovery room.

Assists in Central Supply when operating room is not utilized.

Has knowledge of operating the sterilizers in a proper and safe manner.

Takes OR call.  Available in event of a hospital disaster or emergency.

Identifies specific patient needs for all age groups appropriately when setting up surgical cases.

Has training in CPR.  Keeps updated per hospital requirements.  Able to assist at times needed when patient has an adverse reaction or emergent situation.

Interacts with patients, families, physicians, nursing and other OR personnel.

Provides technical information and assistance to medical staff and all outside physicians who provide surgical services.

Participates in Quality Improvement Program.

Works with Nurse Clinical Assistant to keep computer skills up-to-date.

Demonstrate appropriateness in meeting objectives in age-specifics.

Performs other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

Completion of an Operating Room Surgical Technician program with successful completion of the certification exam.

BLS certified.

Preferred minimum one year experience in the Operating Room.

Flexible.  Able to work a variety of hours when needed.

Able to function under pressure.  Communicates well.

Demonstrates knowledge and competence in surgical and ancillary procedures and techniques.

Must take on-call rotation.

Willing to train in Central Supply and work in that unit as needed.

Complete understanding and compliance with all HIPAA regulations.

Satisfactory health as evidenced by a physical exam.
