Friends University invites applications for a tenure-track faculty position in choral music education at the rank of Assistant Professor, commencing August 4th, 2025. The successful candidate will join a thriving music education program, teach and develop the music education curriculum, conduct the university’s Concert Choir, and coach dedicated vocal students. The music program boasts a wide array of vocal opportunities for students, including multiple choirs, jazz vocal ensemble, musical theatre, opera, participation in regional and national NATS competitions, and the Kansas Music Educators Association annual in-service workshop.  

 

Duties will include recruitment and retention of undergraduate students, advising current voice students (BM education students), fulfilling committee assignments, and participating in activities supported by the division. In addition, participation in professional organizations is desired as well as maintaining an active scholarly profile.  

 

Teaching responsibilities will include the following: 

  • Assist with the administration, evaluation and accreditation of the music education and choral programs by working collaboratively with our Director of Music Education and Director of Choral Studies. 
  • Supervise music education field experiences, serve as the supervisor for student teachers, and develop local school partnerships along with other music education faculty.  
  • Direct the Friends University Concert Choir and other choral ensembles as needed. 
  • Assist with choral concerts and events working collaboratively with the Director of Choral Studies.
  • Teach choral music education courses. 
  • Teach voice lessons to music majors, music theatre majors, and non-majors. 
  • Teach other courses as determined by the department which may include music theory and music history. 

Qualifications

Required Qualifications: 

  • Master’s degree in music or music education. 
  • Minimum of 5 years of teaching experience as a state-licensed PK-12 music educator in general music and/or choral music settings.  
  • Strong background in music education theory, pedagogy, and curriculum development. 
  • Record of or potential for scholarly research and publication in music education. 
  • Ability to effectively teach diverse groups of students and create an inclusive learning environment. 
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with a passion for mentoring students. 

 

Preferred Qualifications: 

  • Terminal degree in music education, choral conducting, or related field. 
  • Experience teaching PK-12 general and vocal music at the elementary and secondary levels. 
  • Experience teaching at the college/university level, particularly in music teacher education programs. 
  • Kodály certification. 
  • Piano skills for accompanying students or productions.
