Summary/Objective
A Tour Guide’s primary role is to provide guests with exceptional customer service, a fascinating tour, and notable information about the retired ore ship, the William A. Irvin.

Requirements & Competencies

  • Ability to maintain a positive disposition while quickly and courteously responding to guests.
  • Ability to work well with others.
  • Ability to deal with frequent change, delays, or unexpected events.
  • Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, procedure manuals, and the tour narrative.
  • Able to communicate and speak effectively in front of small and large group settings.
  • No minimum education requirements for this position.
  • Exceptional customer service.

  • Customer service experience
  • Knowledge of the Duluth area

  • Provide historic facts and narratives to groups and individuals while they tour the William A. Irvin.
  • Positively deliver a memorable experience to a diverse audience.
  • Answer questions and provide additional information necessary to complete the full
    tour experience.
  • Follow safety protocols and assume responsibility for the safety of any groups or individuals in your area.
  • Execute stationary and guided tours duties.
  • Responsible for helping to keep the ship clean and tour-ready.
  • Assist team and/or other departments with tasks, including light cleaning, moving chairs, merchandise, or signage, and other event or tour related functions.
  • Create and maintain a professional and hospitable appearance and atmosphere.

Schedule

This position is part-time with a schedule based on the primary tourist season, Spring-Fall. The Tour Guides are expected to work variable shifts and must be available to work weekends.  Approximately 8-28 hours per week.  This schedule is subject to change.

Uniform
Business casual, weather appropriate clothing, and jeans are allowed.  The DECC will provide shirts with the William A. Irvin/DECC logos.

Physical Demands & Work Environment

  • Moderately strenuous tasks included.
  • Required to stand, walk, talk and hear.
  • Must occasionally lift and/or move up to 25 pounds.
  • Able to carry on a conversation while walking and climbing steep and narrow stairs.
  • Requires someone that is able to stand on their feet for many hours at a time, moving quickly to different places based on needs.
  • Regularly exposed to outside weather conditions and warm and/or humid areas.
  • Exposed to high places, narrow passageways and steep stairs.

Additional Eligibility Requirements

  • Must be 16 years of age or older.
  • Successful completion of reference checks.
  • Successful completion of a background check.
  • Successful completion of a drug test, if applicable.

Work Authorization/Security Clearance Requirements
The DECC uses USCIS Form I-9 to verify the identity and employment authorization of individuals hired for employment. On the form, an employee must attest to his or her employment authorization. The employee is required to present the DECC with acceptable documents evidencing identity and employment authorization at the time of hire. The DECC will examine the employment eligibility and identity document(s).
The list of acceptable documents can be provided by Human Resources.

At-Will Employment
This position is at will. This means if you are offered the position and accept, your employment with the DECC is for an indefinite period of time and it is subject to termination by you or the DECC, with or without cause, with or without notice, and at any time. Nothing in this job description or any other policy of the DECC shall be interpreted to be in conflict with or to eliminate or modify in any way, the at will employment status of this position.

The at will employment status of an employee of the DECC may be modified only in a written employment agreement with that employee which is signed by the Executive Director or the Chair of the DECC Board of Directors.
