The University Archivist supports the educational mission of the University by developing and maintaining general and Huston-Tillotson University historical archival born-digital and print resources to meet the needs of students, faculty, staff, and other constituencies. The Archivist is responsible for providing reference for the Archives. The Archivist will work with the respective departments of the Downs-Jones Library and independently to provide access to and enhance the discovery of archival and born-digital collections. The person in this position will stimulate student, faculty, and staff teaching, research, and learning through the use of the Archives and Special Collections.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
- Coordinates the general operation of the University Archives including research appointments, record management, assessment of outcomes, hiring and training of student workers;
- Provides leadership and creative vision to carry out the archival program to promote the preservation of archival materials, born-digital materials, and digitization;
- Processes archival collections;
- Creates DACS and EAD compliant finding aids for collections;
- Develops, implements, and manages the creation of access points for digital archives;
- Manages various archival management systems, digital repository, and related software;
- Assists users in the selection of resources from the archives;
- Works with donors and stakeholders on and off campus to coordinate the systematic intake of new accessions into the archives;
- Develops, implements, and manages archival outreach activities;
- Creates and maintains rotating displays of archival materials;
- Works with departments on campus to provide archival materials for promotional campaigns, as requested;
- Serves on the Public Services desk providing reference as needed, including administering Chat reference;
- Submits periodic reports to the Director of Library and Media Services;
- Updates and modifies archives policy and digital preservation policy as needed in collaboration with the library staff and Director of Library and Media Services;
- Works with the Director of Library and Media Services and other library staff members in planning and implementing library enhancements for improved quality public services;
- Participates in continuing education opportunities;
- Occasional evening and weekend hours may be necessary to accommodate institutional events and needs;
- Conducts community outreach and partners on external projects to promote the institution;
- Undertakes other duties as assigned by the Director for continued, effective, and quality service.
SUPERVISION
This position reports to the Director of Library and Media Services.
