The dean of the College of Christian Studies serves as the College’s chief executive officer, modeling intellectual, professional, and theological excellence in the disciplines represented therein. The dean is responsible for the day-to-day operations of the college, including curriculum development and oversight, faculty evaluation and development, the promotion of student recruitment, and community engagement. The dean is in charge of all programs in the college, graduate and undergraduate; Tigerville, Greer, non-traditional, and other locations; face-to-face and online; and other formats. The dean of the College of Christian Studies must maintain active membership in a South Carolina Baptist church that complies in its ethical commitments to NGU’s community standards and affirm the Baptist Faith and Message 2000, the Chicago Statement on Inerrancy, the Manhattan Declaration, and the Nashville Statement.
The deanship is a public-facing role at NGU, with strong interactions expected relative to local churches and associations, the South Carolina Baptist Convention, the Southern Baptist Convention, parachurch organizations, and other opportunities to represent the university’s ministerial preparation programs. The deanship also includes donor relations and other stakeholder interactions.
Rank and Load
- Rank of professor in appropriate discipline strongly preferred, with an earned Ph.D. or equivalent research terminal degree.
- Six load hours per academic year; other hours by separate agreement, but this position is primarily an administrative role.
- Courses may be undergraduate or graduate, in-person or online
Curriculum Development and Oversight
- Lead the college in all matters related to curricular development and revision (courses, degrees, certificates, continuing education sessions, etc.)
- Monitor curricula at all levels and in all formats and locations to ensure quality, outcomes, assessments, and reviews
- Work with deans in other academic units to coordinate offerings, programs, and opportunities that can create efficient partnerships and opportunities for students
- Serve as a permanent member of administrative councils and select committees (academic deans council, curriculum committee, etc.)
Faculty Evaluation and Development
- Oversee the hiring of new faculty, the retention and development of continuing faculty, and the evaluation and promotion of faculty
- Oversee the development of leaders in the college, including supervision of and review of unit administrators and leaders
- Maintain college faculty commitment to the Baptist Faith and Message 2000, as well as the mission, core values, and general ethical expectations of the North Greenville University
Community Engagement
- Lead and coordinate the university’s efforts to engage in local and regional activities and opportunities related to the subject areas housed within the College
- Work closely with the VP for Advancement & University Engagement and Office of Advancement staff on events, fundraising, partnerships, and other functions
- Represent the university in church and community events (associational meetings, state convention meetings, SBC annual meeting, public events, lectureships, etc.)
- Engage local churches with opportunities to edify and or enhance their understanding of the disciplines housed in the College’s disciplinary scope
- Cultivate relationships with area pastors, directors of missions / strategists, and other ministry leaders, including South Carolina Baptists, North Carolina Baptists, and other evangelical Christians
- Identify and cultivate external leaders who can serve as advisors (both formally as a board of advisors and informally) and champions for NGU’s Christian Studies programs / initiatives
- Write, speak, consult in fields of expertise

Compensation
Base salary is determined relative to the faculty appointment and a stipend is added to enhance the compensation for the term of the administrative role. As administrative faculty, the dean serves at the pleasure of the Provost and President; a solely instructional faculty appointment is not implied by this role. Any additional administrative roles will be contracted under separate agreement. Compensation drawn apart from university activities (preaching, speaking, writing, etc.) is considered personal earnings and not claimed by the university as long as separate activities do not impinge on primary duties. In accordance with the faculty handbook, teaching—including doctoral supervision—for other institutions is permissible and should be approved in writing by the Provost in advance.
