The Opportunity

The Director of School Operations (DSO) is a senior leadership role focused on building the capacity of school-based operations teams to ensure every school runs with excellence. This leader will serve as the primary coach for Assistant Principals of Operations (APOs) and their teams across both Mississippi and Tennessee, and will work closely with principals to support their operational leadership and the development of their APOs.
 

This is the organization’s most school-facing operations role—responsible for ensuring that school operations teams are empowered, accountable, and growing. The DSO will also serve as a trusted advisor to the COO, bringing critical insights from schools to inform strategy, and will play a key role in managing operational execution and readiness across the network.

 

What You’ll Do

 

Coach and Develop High-Performing School Operations Teams (Primary Focus of the Role)

  • Serve as the primary coach for Assistant Principals of Operations (APOs) across the network, with a focus on driving outcomes and building leadership capacity
  • Design and lead high-quality professional development for operations team members at all levels
  • Partner with school principals to build their understanding of school operations and support their development of APOs
  • Drive strong execution of school-level operational systems through direct coaching, clear expectations, and accountability structures
  • Support APOs in developing and leading school operations teams
  • Regularly assess operational execution, provide coaching and development aligned to performance, and help build long-term capacity across teams

 

Foster Operational Excellence at the School Level

  • Ensure consistent implementation of school-based operational systems including attendance, enrollment, communication, facilities management, and other daily systems
  • Coach APOs to monitor operational data, troubleshoot barriers, and drive continuous improvement
  • Collaborate with school leaders to ensure operations are aligned with academic goals and the student experience
  • Maintain clear expectations and a strong bar of excellence across school operations functions
     

Build School Leader Partnership and Cross-Functional Alignment

  • Collaborate with network departments (academics, talent, finance, etc.) to ensure smooth execution of school-facing workstreams
  • Lead operations walkthroughs, site visits, and performance reviews in partnership with the COO and other organizational leaders 
  • Be a trusted advisor to the COO, elevating trends, needs, and opportunities to strengthen the organization’s operational systems and strategy

Oversee Key Operational Systems and Supports

  • Coordinate and support the implementation of key operational systems across the network, including preventative maintenance, vendor performance and feedback cycles, asset management, procurement,  and safety/compliance execution
  • Lead school-level readiness efforts for the start of school, testing windows, and summer maintenance
  • Support school-based teams in ensuring compliance with safety protocols and building expectations (e.g., drills, signage, inspections)
  • Serve as the operations point of contact during emergencies, ensuring clear communication and swift resolution in partnership with the COO and school teams
  • Support major facilities projects in collaboration with the COO, including capital improvement planning, vendor coordination, and execution oversight

Qualifications

  • 5+ years of experience leading school operations, preferably in a public charter school setting
  • Experience coaching or developing adults, with a track record of building high-performing teams
  • Demonstrated success designing and implementing systems that drive outcomes
  • Excellent project management, communication, and relationship-building skills
