Human Simulation plays a crucial role in the education and training of healthcare professionals by simulating real patient interactions in a psychological safe learning environment. The terms standardized patient and simulated patient (SP) are often used interchangeably and refer to a person trained to portray a patient (or patients family member, or healthcare provider) in realist and repeatable ways.

As a human simulation educator, a simulated patient is coached to accurately and consistently recreate the personality, medical history, health conditions, psychosocial history, and emotional response patterns of a patient in a pa1ticular point of care. Under direction, with latitude for initiative and judgement, a simulated patient educator performs specific health conditions, histories, and personalities in a consistent, standardized, and sometimes adaptive manner to provide learners with a realistic clinical experience.

Simulated patients are part of the simulation education team, focused on fulfilling the learning objectives of simulation activities in services of our team of interprofessional healthcare providers. SPs will be trained on a variety of educational projects to depict prewritten patient roles (or family members/care providers), portray various case scenarios for learners, and provide evaluation and feedback to learners on their interactions.

Ultimately, SPs provide opportunities for learners to develop, practice, and enhance therapeutic communication, interviewing, examination, and non-invasive technical skills (i.e. vital signs) through experiential education of various medical scenarios across the healthcare system.
