Buchalter APC is seeking a highly skilled and motivated Research & Innovation Specialist to join our Research & Information Services Department.  This position is responsible for training attorneys and paralegals in the use of digital research tools, developing internal training programs, coordinating vendor-provided trainings and assisting with legal and business research. The ideal candidate will possess a deep understanding of legal research databases and tools, excellent training and communication skills, and a strong commitment to enhancing the firm's research capabilities. This position requires proficiency in prioritizing and completing multiple projects with varying deadlines and levels of difficulty. 

Responsibilities:

  • Develops, promotes and delivers one-on-one and group trainings to attorneys and other professional team members in an on-going basis.
  • Coordinates trainings of digital resources with vendors to ensure that our attorneys and other professional team members understand how to use the resources and tools.
  • Tracks attendance of in-house and vendor trainings.
  • Acts as research liaison to practice groups, including attending meetings and reporting back on information and training needs.
  • Trains and orients newly hired attorneys and other professional team members to the services and resources offered by the Research & Information Services Department.
  • Handles password and access management for research resources.
  • Updates documentation for digital research resources, including but not limited to access instructions.
  • Participates in projects that increase the value of the Research and Information Services Department to the Firm, including implementing marketing strategies to promote the department’s services and resources.
  • Participates in the regular review and evaluation of new and existing electronic resources.
  • Serves as the administrator for the Research Services intranet pages and content. This includes design and maintenance of the department’s intranet page, including updating practice group and jurisdictional content pages as needed.
  • Works with vendors, IT and research staff to test, configure, update, and troubleshoot the department’s digital resources.
  • Keeps abreast of emerging technologies, developments and innovations as they affect legal and business research.
  • Performs high-level, in-depth research and analysis in legal, business, and other subjects using appropriate electronic resources.
  • Works on special projects or any other duties as assigned.

Required Qualifications:

  • Master’s degree in Library and Information Science (MLIS) or Juris Doctor (JD) degree from an accredited institution.
  • Minimum of 5 years of experience in a legal research or law firm setting, with substantial experience designing and implementing training programs relating to research resources and development of search strategies.
  • Demonstrated strong teaching and presentation skills.
  • Confident and approachable manner when communicating with all levels at the firm.
  • Energetic and highly-motivated work ethic, desire to constantly seek out ways to improve knowledge and processes.
  • Ability to foster productive working connections across the department, practice groups, office and firm, as well as with vendors and others outside the firm.
  • Strong research skills, with a proven ability to conduct thorough and efficient legal and business research.
  • Ability to effectively conduct research in unfamiliar disciplines, areas or jurisdictions, as necessary.
  • Extensive expertise with research databases such as Lexis, Westlaw, Practical Law, Bloomberg, VitalLaw, Intelligize and S&P Capital IQ; and an ability to quickly learn multiple new research platforms.
  • Experience with legal analytics and artificial intelligence is highly preferred.

Pay Scale: The reasonably expected pay scale for this position is $90-115k.  This is an employer estimate and the salary offered within that range, and the potential for bonus and bonus amount, will depend on candidate’s years of practice and experience and performance.
