San Diego Humane Society is hiring a Communications Specialist for our Philanthropy & Communications team!

In this role, you’ll tell San Diego Humane Society’s story by creating messaging for various purposes (fundraising, education and stewardship) through a wide range of media – email, direct mail, video, social media, printed collateral and more. This role reports to the Director of Communications and is part of the creative content team that encompasses copywriting, video and photography. What you’ll do:

  • Develops, writes and edits creative, accessible content for San Diego Humane Society’s external and internal communications, including:
    • Emails
    • Website copy (designed to be clear and accessible)
    • Fundraising and stewardship communications
    • Press releases
    • Printed collateral
    • Internal newsletters/alerts
    • And more!
  • Oversees donor acknowledgment letter templates and website auto-responders, updating materials on a regular basis with content that inspires donors to continue supporting San Diego Humane Society.
  • Creates language to update SDHS website with current and accurate program information (services, hours of operation, pricing, campus closures, etc.).
  • Creates language for SDHS collateral, including brochures, flyers, manuals and signs.
  • Manages SDHS Google & Yelp reviews and drafts thoughtful, empathetic responses.
  • Researches, writes content for and maintains a database of animal stories for use in SDHS communications.
  • Conducts research for communications projects and actively participates in professional development opportunities.
  • Assists with time-sensitive communications, such as media responses, fundraising campaigns, operational updates, etc.
  • Attends and assists as needed with major special events and activities, which may occur after hours or on weekends.

 

What we’re looking for:

  • Requires a bachelor’s degree in English, Communications or related subject with at least three (3) years of professional writing and communications experience, or any combination of relevant experience and education.
  • Must have exceptional creative writing and editing skills, as demonstrated by past professional work, and excellent time management, multi-tasking and organizational skills.
  • Must have a valid driver’s license and be approved by SDHS insurance carrier to drive a company or personal vehicle for work purposes.

 

Location & Hours: Supporting all campuses, but based at our San Diego Campus. This position works 40 hours per week and includes regular automobile travel and visits to off-site locations and special events using your own transportation. After initial onboarding and per Director preferences, this position may work in a hybrid office/work-from-home model or may work from the on-site office full time.


Pay: Starting range is between $66,560 – $74,880 per year.

 

The listed hiring range for this position depicts the target range of pay rates for candidates. The maximum of the hiring range is reserved for candidates with the highest qualifications and relevant experience. Compensation for internal candidates may increase beyond the listed range based on performance over time. For all candidates, the actual starting pay rate is determined by a variety of factors, including but not limited to your years of related education and experience, internal pay equity, and position location.
