Description

MuSE: A Community Museum from the Center for Environment and Society (CES) highlights Washington College teaching, experiential learning, and research at the intersection of environment and community. It will create opportunities for active collaboration between for the college community, surrounding Eastern Shore community organizations, regional K-12 educators, students, and visitors. MuSE is located at 210 S Cross St. in downtown Chestertown. Exhibits rotate between 2-4 times a year depending on exhibit content, other exhibits, and specific needs of exhibitor. Each exhibition will have programming to increase visitation.  

CES manages MuSE, but the exhibit team can be from other faculty, staff, students, or community members. CES provides support to each exhibitor and the MuSE intern will play a key role in that support. The MuSE intern will serve as a docent to open MuSE and they must be available on some of the Saturdays during their internship period. MuSE is currently open on First Fridays from 4:30 pm - 7:30 pm and Saturdays from 9 am – 12 pm. 

MuSE Community Museum Intern responsibilities include:  

  • Serve as docent and open MuSE on Saturdays from 9 am – 12pm. 
  • Assist with installation of the exhibitions with MuSE in Chestertown. 
  • Develop adult and youth programming to increase visitation at MuSE.  
  • Prepare educational materials for programming and exhibition. 
  • Support CES Communication & Events Manager with exhibit and museum marketing.

Qualifications

  • Must have some availability on Saturdays, 9 am – 12 pm.  
  • Strong interest in community/public education, especially environmental education. 
  • Experience with design preferred, but not required. 
  • Work independently and meet deadlines. 
  • Strong organizational skills with the ability to multi-task. 
  • Effective communication skills. 
  • The ability to work at Semans-Griswold Environmental Hall and MuSE: A Community Museum. 

Additional Info

  • Intern will be paid $15/hour for approximately 5-10 hours/week.
  • This internship is hosted by the Center for Environment and Society.
  • Work will be conducted at Semans-Griswold Environmental Hall and at MuSE: A Community Museum at 210 S Cross Street, Chestertown.
