Description

Friends of Eastern Neck (FOEN) partners with the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service and our local community to preserve and support Eastern Neck National Wildlife Refuge in Rock Hall, MD. FOEN efforts include hands-on volunteer service at the Refuge and educational programs for children and adults. They also participate in environmental initiatives and assist with infrastructure maintenance and improvements to enhance the visitor experience. Their two signature projects on the island are the operation of the Gift Shop and Bookstore in the historic Lodge and the volunteer-maintained Butterfly Garden. FOEN, a 501(c)3 non-profit organization incorporated under the laws of the state of Maryland, is one of many Friends groups around the country helping sustain the National Wildlife Refuge System. We currently have 300 members.

 

Activities will vary depending on the interestes and skilset of the intern. Potential activities may include: 

  • Working with the editor of our quarterly newsletter on one or more articles
  • Providing photographs for the newsletter and the web site
  • Working with our webmaster on content and/or design of new features
  • Writing promotional copy and/or designing display ads for print and digital outlets
  • Helping staff our booth at outreach events (e.g. Rock Hall FallFest in October, Small Business Saturday in November)
  • Assisting with educational programs such as school field trips or bird walks
  • Strategizing about how best to raise awareness of the Refuge and FOEN within the Washington College community
  • Tentative: Social media plan is still a work in progress, but this could be included in the portfolio.

  • Intern may work at Semans-Griswold Environmental Hall, but there will also be remote working and activities at Eastern Neck NWR.

Additional Info

  • Intern will be paid $15/hour with approximately 10 hours per week. Schedule is flexible based on student availability.
  • This internship is sponsored by the Center for Environment and Society, but will be supervised by Friends of Eastern Neck National Wildlife Refuge.
