Description

In an environment of continuous quality improvement, the Fitness and Wellness Specialist I is responsible for assisting the Fitness and Wellness Specialist II and Director with the daily operation of the Wellness Center and included programs. This position also instructs group exercise programs, takes on personal training clients where applicable, maintains member files, handles Wellness Center clerical work, and assists in implementing motivational programs. The Fitness and Wellness Specialist I is required to provide a high level of member interaction and service to improve membership participation and satisfaction. Exhibits the MHS Standards of Excellence and exercises strict confidentiality at all times.

 

Job Functions:

  1. Assists in daily operation of fitness facility.
  2. Interacts with fitness center members to ensure exercise programs are conducted in a safe manner, as well as instructing members on proper equipment use.  Addresses the concerns of fitness center members.
  3. Conducts fitness and wellness consultations in order to assist in developing and implementing individualized exercise programs for members based on fitness evaluations and goals, as requested.  Must also consider any physical limitations or restrictions set by provider and/or self-reported by member and be able to adapt exercise program accordingly. 
  4. Works with director, other department staff and medical librarian to conduct research on Evidence Based programs that meet the needs of local community and uses this research to educate and grow the services provided in the Health System.
  5. Works with MHS physicians and APPs as needed in order to promote referral into health and wellness programs and services.
  6. Maintains fitness center equipment and facility upkeep.
  7. Assists in increasing membership and usage of the Wellness Centers, as needed.
  8. Handles clerical duties such as ordering paper, answering telephones, scheduling appointments, and sorting mail.
  9. Assists with special projects as requested.
  10. Efficiently opens the facility for operation by unlocking doors, turning on equipment, checking equipment for use, and making sure facility is ready and equipped for classes.
  11. Securely closes the facility after hours of operation by turning equipment off, cleaning up after the day, preparing equipment for the next day, and ensuring all doors are closed and locked.
  12. Assists new and current employees in gaining access to the wellness centers through locating and completing documentation on MyMemorial, locating access numbers on badges and explaining method of use, orienting them to the facility, training them on areas/equipment of doubt, and maintaining approachability for questions or guidance.
  13. Assumes all other duties and responsibilities as necessary.

Qualifications

Minimum Education/Experience Required:

  • Associate’s Degree in a health-related field required; Will consider equivalent experience in lieu of education on case-by-case basis.
  • Experience in prescribing and implementing exercise programs required.
  • Experience working with special patient populations such as diabetic, oncology, bariatric, and post-cardiac rehab preferred.
  • BLS certification required – will be obtained during Hospital Orientation.
  • Personal Trainer, Group Exercise Instructor, Health Coach, and/or other specialty exercise or fitness certifications preferred.

 

Special Knowledge, Skills, Training:

  • Must have ability to use Microsoft programs (Excel, Word, PowerPoint, etc.)
  • Ability to accept responsibility and account for his/her actions.
  • Ability to perform work accurately and thoroughly.
  • Must have interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to take care of the customers’ needs while following hospital policies.
  • Ability to be sensitive to the feelings of others.
  • Ability to get along well with a variety of personalities, age groups and individuals.
  • Ability to utilize the available time to organize and complete work within given deadlines.
  • Proficient in taking blood pressure and demonstrates understanding in use of Pulse Oximeter and Heart Rate monitor.

 

Compensation Details:  Education, experience, and tenure may be considered along with internal equity when job offers are extended.
