Description

In an environment of continuous quality improvement, the Cancer Registrar is responsible for abstracting patient medical records to identify cancer patients. Maintains information on hospital’s tumor registry. Submits information to appropriate agencies, conducts necessary studies, and prepares reports to ensure continued accreditation. Exhibits the MHS Standards of Excellence and exercises strict confidentiality at all times.

Job Functions:

  1. Performs accurate and complete abstracting using the computerized cancer registry database for all reportable and required cases according to reporting standards, state requirements, and facility requirements: case finding, abstracting, staging, treatment, recurrence information, and follow-up.
  2. Collects, manages, maintains, and analyzes cancer data in an electronic information system, consistent with professional standards, state law, national/regulatory standards and MMH requirements.
  3. Performs review of all patient access points in the Memorial Health System to identify new cancer registry cases.
  4. Responds to requests for cancer registry data in a professional and timely manner in accordance with department/unit standards.
  5. Assists with Tumor Board conferences on an as needed basis: organizes, participates, and takes minutes.
  6. Assumes all other duties and responsibilities as necessary.

Qualifications

Minimum Education/Experience Required:

  • High School Diploma or GED required.
  • Associates degree preferred.
  • Courses in medical terminology, anatomy and physiology preferred.
  • Certified Tumor Registrar (CTR) certification preferred.
  • If not a current CTR, must obtain certification within 3 years of hire date.

Special Knowledge, Skills, Training:

  • Excellent verbal, presentation, and written communication skills.
  • Demonstrated proficiency in computer skills, Microsoft office applications and cancer registry software programs.
  • Ability to work independently.

Compensation Details: Education, experience, and tenure may be considered along with internal equity when job offers are extended.
