Description

In an environment of continuous quality improvement, the Cytotechnologist is responsible for performing a variety of technical, analytical and clinical duties. This position stains, mounts, and studies human body cells to detect evidence of cancer and other pathological conditions following established standards and practices. Exhibits the MHS Standards of Excellence and exercises strict confidentiality at all times.

Job Functions:

  1. Follows established procedures to perform routine, STAT or special tests on gynecological and non-gynecological specimens.
  2. Performs and documents all required quality control procedures; maintains workload recording information and other records deemed necessary to comply with regulatory agency standards.
  3. Operates maintains and troubleshoots instruments and equipment to perform standard and special tests; documents all required activities.
  4. Notifies supervisor of any unusual or unexpected results. Reports all suspicious/positive results to appropriate personnel. Completes all required documentation.
  5. Maintains a neat and efficient work area at all times.
  6. Follows all organizational, departmental and section policies (i.e. Universal Precautions, Fire Safety, QA Documentation, Hazardous Wastes).
  7. Conducts self in professional manner at all times (apparel, telephone conversations, staff peer interactions, etc.)
  8. Assumes all other duties and responsibilities as necessary.

Qualifications

Minimum Education/Experience Required:

  • Bachelor’s degree required.
  • Minimum of one year internship in accredited hospital required.
  • Successful completion of C.T. Registry (ASCP) required.
  • Registry or certification in Cytology by HEW required.

Special Knowledge, Skills, Training:

  • Must have working knowledge of all aspects of cytology, such as cyto-preparation of specimens, staining, and cellular morphogy of both gyn and non-gyn cytology.
  • Must have mastered the ability to use the microscope for several hours at a time with alertness and precision.

Compensation Details: Education, experience, and tenure may be considered along with internal equity when job offers are extended.
