JOB PURPOSE

The Director of Finance is responsible for informing the AFTD organization strategy and overseeing all financial aspects of the organization in partnership with the COO.

 

Job Summary

The Director of Finance is responsible for providing vision and leadership that ensures AFTD’s resources are allocated appropriately and effectively to advance the mission of the organization.  They will inform key stakeholders and board members of financial status, budgets and other information as requested. The Director of Finance will collaborate with Senior Leadership in the development of KPIs and will track, monitor and report on these measures. They will ensure the compliance of the organization’s financials with all state and federal laws and will coordinate audit activities as required. They will also oversee and monitor the work of outsourced consultants related to these areas and will serve as a member of AFTD’s senior leadership team.

 

FUNCTIONAL RESPONSIBILITIES

Essential Job Functions

  • Strategic Leadership: Develop and lead business and financial strategies that enable development opportunities for the organization; craft and lead an overarching, cohesive strategy for AFTD investments that leverage the organization’s finite financial resources.
  • Financial Management:
    • Develop and lead organizational budget process
    • Develop forecasting, financial modeling, and variance analysis processes to support strategic decision-making
    • Oversee the accurate and timely preparation of financial statements, management reports, and other financial analysis
    • Provide insights and recommendations to support decision making
    • Develop and implement internal controls to mitigate financial risks, safeguard assets, and ensure compliance with applicable financial laws, regulations, and accounting standards
    • Monitor and manage cash flow and oversee treasury functions
    • Supervise and manage the day-to-day financial operations, including accounting, systems, and transactions
    • Collaborate and build strong relationships with stakeholders, including leadership, board, auditors, and financial institutions
  • FTDDR LLC CFO/Treasurer: Establish and monitor appropriate fiscal controls, oversight of annual audit, cash management. Support FTDDR LLC management with financial reporting, budgeting, grant compliance, and financial risk management.

 

Other Job Functions

  • Foster and promote a culture of high performance, continuous improvement, and learning through ongoing professional development, mentoring, and collaboration in partnership with AFTD leadership.
  • Staff lead for Board Finance, Investment and Audit Committees.
  • Manages AFTD’s audit, insurance, banking, investment, and other external relationships in support of AFTD’s mission and goals.

 

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES

  • This position has supervisory responsibilities for the following roles:
    • Office Manager
    • Managed Outsourced Contractor

Qualifications

Knowledge, skills, and abilities required for this role:

 

Education:

  • Bachelor’s degree required, Master’s degree strongly preferred in Finance, Accounting or another related field of study.

Licensure/Credentials:

  • CPA license preferred

Experience:

  • Minimum 10-15 years of progressively responsible financial/accounting experience, preferably in a nonprofit organization
  • Nonprofit experience required
  • Proven track record in system implementations, including integrated accounting platforms
  • Preparation of 990’s, including lobbying disclosure
  • Management of annual state fundraising registrations
  • Experience in grants management from multiple sources (Individuals, Foundations, Federal Awards) 
  • Implementation of internal controls, policies and procedures and best practices

Special Knowledge/Skills:

  • Strong, current working knowledge of financial and organizational compliance requirements and proven success in operating in accordance with these elements
  • Proven track record in cultivating and managing key relationships with stakeholders and board members
  • Deep critical thinking and structured problem-solving/analysis skills with ability to develop frameworks for evaluating and recommending cross-functional options and solutions
  • Demonstrated business acumen, especially in setting priorities, creating efficiencies, leveraging opportunities, and developing plans to define and achieve success
  • Advanced Excel skills, proficient in other Microsoft Office programs
  • Knowledge of Salesforce is a plus
  • Exceptional written and oral communication skills, along with the ability to connect and communicate effectively with stakeholders at all levels in various fields
