Position Overview 

The Newington Optical R&D group is looking for a summer intern for applied (experimental) optical research. The group is responsible for a variety of optical topics from fiber-optical amplifier design to factory automation. The ideal candidate would have a background in optics & fiber optics, be lab oriented, be able to work independently, and be organized. There are several different research opportunities available to pursue, which will be discussed after hiring. The projects range from fundamental research (paper research, computer simulation, lab experiments, etc.) to recipe/workstation verification and qualification. The intern would work independently, but closely with several members of the Optical R&D group. At the end of the summer, the intern will have learned more about sub-sea fiber optical communication, as well as optical research skills.

Responsibilities 

  • Essential Functions: Experimental research: literature review, computer simulations, experimental setup and data collection, data analysis and report generation (Word, PowerPoint)
  • Other Functions: Light machining/assembly, soldering

Qualifications

Qualifications 

  • Knowledge, Skills and Abilities: Optics, computer programing, electronics, (Optional: SolidWorks, fundamentals of automation)
  • Minimum Qualifications: Minimum level of education: Junior in Engineering or Physics.
  • Success Factors: Self-starter, curious, inquisitive, and confident
