SUMMARY

The Staff Engineer prepares drawings utilizing electronic drafting software for civil engineering projects including small and basic levels of design for site plans, grading plans, utility plans, details, erosion controls, road plans and profiles, cross-sections, utility and storm drainage plans and profiles, retaining walls, with appropriate notations etc. Performs drainage and earthwork calculations. Knowledge of project scope, progressive knowledge of zoning or wetland regulations and general client requirements.

 

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include the following. Other duties may be assigned:

Utilizing rough sketches, drawings, drawings by outside agencies, surveys and other sources of material provided by Project Engineer, Senior Engineer or Project Manager, the preparation of detailed drawings of site, grading, utility, erosion controls, road or drainage plans, cross sections, profiles, detail sheets, general notes, plan notations and titles, dimensioning etc.

The design and preparation of small and basic size project concept plans to concept plans of greater complexity, preliminary plans, design development level plans, permitting drawings used for submission to planning and zoning, inland wetlands, zoning hearing boards, township councils, zoning board of appeals, DEP, DEQ, ACOE, etc. under the supervision of a Project Engineer, Senior Engineer or Project Manager.

Edits of drawings or work product based on review comments, redlined drawing markups or design changes.

Preparation of quantity estimates, minor cost estimates, storm drainage calculations for pipe networks, utilizing rational and/or HydroCAD or TR 55 methodology or other software.

Prepares, earthwork calculations, erosion control calculations and roadway geometrics.

Utilizes electronic drafting software using current BL platforms of AutoCAD and/or Microstation. Use of Word and Excel are necessary.

Designs in conformity with client requirements and contract scope and normal engineering standards under the direction of Senior Engineer or Project Manager.

Communication of findings to members of project design team and supervisor(s).

Knowledge of zoning and wetland regulations for bulk zoning requirements, parking, landscaping buffers, knowledge of general drainage conveyance and utility connections methods and standard practices, soils limitations, grading limitations.

Limited construction inspections, and site visits for data collection.

Performs field testing, monitoring and data collection under the supervision of a Project Engineer, Senior Engineer or Project Manager.

Minor report or report element preparation.

Use of company file management practices and following company drawing standards and company detail libraries.

Occasional travel to other company offices or project sites to fulfill workload demands can be expected.

Speed of task preparation and progression to more complex tasks and mastery of these duties and responsibilities should improve with experience level at this position, along with the ability to identify and add essential elements necessary for completion of the product with lessening of supervisor input as experience level increases.

EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE

BS in Civil Engineering. No experience required.

 

LANGUAGE SKILLS

Ability to read and interpret documents such as regulations, ordinances, application forms, technical plans and procedure manuals. Ability to write routine reports and correspondence. Clear and concise writing and communication skills. Ability to speak effectively to staff and superiors and regulatory agency staff and outside technical personnel.

 

MATHEMATICAL SKILLS

Ability to work with mathematical concepts such as coordinate geometry, and fundamentals of plane and solid geometry and trigonometry. Ability to apply concepts such as fractions, percentages, interpolations, ratios, and proportions to practical situations. Ability to calculate engineering calculations, proportions, percentages, area, circumference, and volume. Ability to apply concepts of basic algebra and geometry.

 

REASONING ABILITY

Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral, or diagram form. Ability to deal with problems involving several variables in standardized situations. Ability to perform tasks in a logical organized manner and sequence.

 

CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS

Fundamentals of Engineering Certificate preferred.

 Candidate should have 0-3 years experience in civil engineering. Experience with land development, site design and stormwater management and erosion and sediment control design. Knowledge of AutoCAD, Civil3D and excellent written and oral communication skills are required.

Responsibilities Include:

  • Experience with CAD and Civil3D
  • Research permit requirements and local regulations.
  • Coordinate with project team across multiple offices on design, permitting and construction components.
  • Provide support and assist Sr team members with stormwater calculations
  • Assist with preparation and design of plans and technical reports to acquire permits and permit modifications during construction.
  • Knowledge of proposed and existing grades for site layout highly preferred

Required Experience:

  • BSCE is required
  • EIT preferred.
