Summary

Directs the services and operations of the Michael Kusalaba branch. Provides leadership, coordination, and accountability for literacy services. Has leadership responsibility for developing initiatives that enhance literacy services to the community: system wide training, coaching and directing staff, and achieving staff job results. Collaborates with area organizations in order to promote and expand literacy services and programs. Uses professional knowledge to assist library customers of all ages in the use of library and literacy resources. Advises customers in selecting and locating materials to meet their informational, educational, and recreational needs. Answers and/or facilitates customer reference questions. Promotes reading and life-long learning by planning and conducting programs, presentations, and services both in the library and off-site. Responsible for keeping abreast of building maintenance and public safety needs. Serves as a liaison between administration and staff, and staff and community.  

Typically leads and manages multiple staff in one or more related functions. Schedules/assigns day to day work, determines staffing needs and communicates these to the relevant administrative positions, and trains and develops staff. Prepares and conducts performance reviews. Develops work plans in conjunction with department and Library goals, with assistance from appropriate director. Operates independently to provide leadership, support, and supervision for literacy services. Support staff development through training and mentorship under the direction of Administration.

  2. Collaborates with area organizations in order to promote and expand literacy services and programs 
  3. Manages the staff, services and operations of Michael Kusalaba branch. Provides ongoing supervision, training, mentoring an evaluation of assigned staff. Maintains accurate records related to personnel and service issues. 
  4. Resolves customer concerns and serves as liaison between staff, administration and the community. 
  5. Develops literacy programming and partnerships through constant professional development, community engagement, and innovation in coordination with Family Engagement Department and other supervisors. 
  6. Provides direct programming/outreach, readers’ advisory, and reference services. 
  7. Keeps library collections current and relevant by selecting, organizing, displaying and weeding material, including adult and family literacy materials. 
  8. Fosters a safe, orderly physical environment for customers and staff, conducive for work, study and enjoyment of the library. 
  9. Any and all other duties as assigned. 

Qualifications

Qualifications

  1. Master’s Degree in Library and Information Science preferred -OR- Bachelor’s Degree combined with 15+ years relevant library experience. 
  2. Bachelor’s Degree in Education, Literacy or related field preferred.  
  3. Bilingual (Spanish) preferred  
  4. Nature of work requires an ability to effectively communicate and exchange information, collect, compile and prepare work documents and operate standard business office equipment.  
  5. Travel throughout the county for programming/outreach and other library business is required with varying frequency.
  6. Majority of work is performed in a general office / library environment.  
  7. Availability for extended or non-traditional hours as needed to perform job duties.  
  8. Participation and attendance at promotional events and off-site meetings required.
  9. Able to reach, bend, climb, squat, lift 25lbs, push up to 50 lbs and stand for long periods of time.  
  10. Commitment to service excellence.
  11. Strong knowledge of the science of reading/how children learn to read.
  12. Ability to recognize successful methods and programs for teaching literacy skills and adapt them to the needs of adults and families in the library. 
  13. Several years of professional experience with progressive levels of responsibility.
  14. Ability to supervise and motivate others and provide appropriate guidance and direction to support the Library’s mission and goals. 
  15. Analytic and problem solving abilities to determine appropriate responses based on a customer’s age, needs, and education.  
  16. Above average communication skills, both written and verbal, including public speaking skills. 
  17. Organizational skills to keep all work current; excellent attention to detail. 
  18. Knowledge and ability to use technology employed by the library at a level necessary to instruct and provide support to both public and staff. 
  19. Strong knowledge of library policies and procedures. 

Work Schedule

  • Must be willing to work days, evenings, and Saturdays (rotating shifts).
  • Must be willing to work at the various locations throughout our Mahoning County system.
  • Full-time hours are generally 40 hours per week. Part-time hours are generally 24 hours per week, with the option to work additional hours possible.
  • Travel to other library branches required occasionally.
  • Availability for extended or non-traditional hours as needed to perform job duties. Participation and attendance at promotional events and off-site meetings may be required at managements discretion.
