SUMMARY

The Roy and Edna Disney CalArts Theater (REDCAT) is a multidisciplinary center for innovative visual and performing art founded by the California Institute of the Arts (CalArts) in the Walt Disney Concert Hall complex in downtown Los Angeles. Through performances, exhibitions, screenings and literary events, REDCAT introduces diverse audiences, students, and artists to the most influential developments in the arts from around the world, and gives artists in this region the creative support they need to achieve national and international stature. REDCAT continues the tradition of CalArts by encouraging experimentation, discovery and lively civic discourse.

The Associate Technical Director of Audio & Video is responsible for managing the sound and video department staff and their day-to-day operations, coordinating the build and load-in of each sound design, as well as setting and maintaining high standards of excellence. This position is full-time, exempt, and benefits eligible. Compensation range for this position is $66,560-$71,546 exempt salaried plus benefits.

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:

  • Lead, manage, and supervise the audio and video aspects of REDCAT, including crewing of A/V over-hire team, and creative supervision as the resident Audio & Visual designer for REDCAT.  This may include designing the sound or video for many productions that do not travel with a sound/video designer, as well as working to integrate the sound design of other companies with REDCAT’s space and equipment.
  • Actively participate in team building. Foster a work environment of Artistic Excellence; Community; Diversity, Equity, Inclusion and Accessibility; and Fiscal Responsibility.
  • Within their responsible department, hire, schedule, supervise, and manage A/V crews for work calls in the theater to ensure quality work.
  • Manage and advise on the Audio & Visual production budgets, in conjunction with technical director.
  • Coach and develop A/V over-hire team as technology advances.
  • Participate in short- and long-term planning to improve the operation, safety and efficiency of REDCAT.
  • Purchase, rent or lease equipment, tools and supplies for specific productions and for the general operation of the theater.
  • Participate in advance communication and production meetings with visiting technicians and designers to advise the Technical Director of production-related needs.  This includes translating Audio & Visual plots provided by touring companies to work with the REDCAT space and equipment.
  • Oversee and manage archival Audio and Video documentation of all shows at REDCAT
  • For select events also oversee and manage Live Stream and On-Demand Viewing.
  • Lead the design and development of A/V systems to meet the artistic demands and goals of REDCAT.
  • Work with vendors to improve existing hardware and software systems.
  • On an emergency basis, serve on performance crews as needed in several capacities, including sound mixer, qLab operator, stage manager, or running crew, as dictated by the needs of the event.

Qualifications

SKILLS/ABILITIES:

  • Demonstrated passion for contemporary performance, art and media.
  • Ability to lead and supervise, while working effectively as part of a team.
  • Demonstrated ability to learn a wide variety of equipment that is used at REDCAT as well as other industry-standard equipment.
  • Creative design skills and talents for advanced audio, video and multimedia events.
  • Budget advisement and management skills related to technical and production division, with an emphasis on Audio & Visual technology.
  • Knowledge of professional audio systems to implement their use in executing the needs of any given production.
  • Knowledge of the process of sound design in theatrical applications to effectively accomplish work.
  • Skill and experience in creative problem solving to meet the artistic needs of the show within time and financial requirements.
  • Proficiency in Dante, qLab, and Pro Tools.
  • Knowledge of acoustics and how this relates to the sound design process. Can hear and analyze small differences in audio sources.
  • Ability to work in Vectorworks, and proficiency in the use of other computer software, such Google Suits, Microsoft Office, Excel.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Knowledge of current best health, ergonomics, and safety practice within the US theatre industry.
  • Works well under pressure and responds calmly and efficiently to frequent changes during the production and rehearsal process.
  • Demonstrated experience in personnel management and designer collaboration.

EXPERIENCE:

  • Minimum of five years’ experience working in technical theater, preferably in an A/V capacity.
  • Thorough background in design, theatrical sound systems and video projection.
  • Extensive professional experience engineering and live-mixing a variety of musical styles, including chamber music, rock, jazz, etc.

Average carrying load 20-50 lbs. Sometimes loads are carried up ladders. Frequently exposed to amplified sound and music. Job is very varied; employee will work in all parts of the facility, including on ladders and catwalk.
