The School Bus Driver is responsible for safely operating the school bus on a regular daily schedule. The Driver must ensure that the School Bus is in good operating conditions at all times; pick up and drop off students as per the schedule and assigned route(s); maintain order and security on the bus; and obey all laws, regulations and rules of conduct.

Essential Job Functions

  • Operate the school bus in a safe and effective manner in order to minimize the risk of injury and/or property damage.
  • Perform daily safety and maintenance checks. Perform pre-trip and post-trip inspections of your bus with each route/charter. Report discrepancies to your dispatcher.
  • Keep the bus clean, fueled, and in good working condition. Communicate with company mechanics on maintenance issues and scheduling the wash bay for cleaning.
  • Ensure the bus is safely and securely stored.
  • Attend safety meetings and training programs as required.
  • Check driver mailbox, bulletin boards, and entry doors for messages upon arrival. Notify dispatch prior to beginning work.
  • Coordinate with office staff to ensure that all routes are current and accurate.
  • Make note of any behavioral or disciplinary problems, reporting as per company and school policy.
  • Observe strict confidentiality regarding passenger and company information.
  • Report all accidents/incidents immediately to Terminal/Safety Manager and dispatch.
  • Follow Kobussen Buses safety and operational rules and procedures.
  • Assist with moving equipment between terminal locations.
  • May be requested to drive for another area terminal.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

Requirements

  • 21+ years old
  • Valid driver's license for last 3 years
  • High School Diploma or equivalent

Skills/Knowledge/Abilities

  • Ability to obtain and maintain a CDL with S and P endorsements
  • Ability to perform the physical requirements of the position, including the safe operation of the assigned vehicle
  • Ability to read and understand route sheet and instructions
  • Effective verbal communication and listening skills
  • Ability to effectively communicate with passengers, parents, and school officials
  • Ability to complete pre- & post-trip inspections
  • Ability to maintain passenger counts and implement bus rules fairly without discrimination
  • Ability to work in a team environment and take direction from supervisors
  • Ability to sit for long periods and maintain intense concentration, particularly in poor driving conditions.
  • Ability to lift up to 50 pounds
  • Ability to work in varying weather conditions including extreme cold and extreme heat.
