The Cultural/Collections Assistant will work under the direction of the Curator and Collections Manager and will assist in cataloguing and properly housing collections. The Assistant will help to care for and preserve artifacts, conduct condition reports, and help to maintain a permanent collections database. They will provide assistance in all aspects of collections related work, including object documentation, inventory projects, exhibition planning and preparation, gallery maintenance, and daily office management. The Assistant will assist the museum’s Executive staff, work with student interns and volunteers, and interface with various departments within the museum to achieve department and institutional goals. The Assistant must be a knowledgeable and culturally competent advisor to museum staff and assist in identifying people and collection items in the ONM’s permanent collection. The assistant will provide culturally relevant information to the ONM staff and will act as a liaison between the museum and the community.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s Degree Required; Degree in Museum studies, Native American studies, Art History, Liberal Arts or related field preferred.
  • At least 3 year(s) working experience in a museum setting and knowledge of Microsoft Office Suite programs preferred
  • Experience with PastPerfect or other museum databases preferred.
  • Lived Osage experience and/or knowledge of Osage history and material culture required.
  • Experience  with handling, preserving, and documenting museum collections and knowledge of museum best practices required
  • Demonstrated commitment to the ethical stewardship of collections.
  • Must maintain a professional attitude and appearance that positively represents the Nation.
  • Requires excellent interpersonal, communication, and diplomacy skills to engage and build working relationships  with diverse collaborators, including tribal leaders, museum staff, scholars, and the public.
  • Must demonstrate genuine interest in supporting the Osage Nation Museum to preserve and celebrate Osage history, art, and culture.
  • Requires a high level of personal integrity and ethics.
  • Requires a high level of problem-solving skills and multi-tasking skills.
  • Must demonstrate skill in operating computers, including web browsers and databases.
  • Must have the ability to perform simple mathematical calculations.
  • Requires the willingness and ability to learn new skills.
  • Must be able to lift 50lbs.
  • Must be able to pass a criminal background check.
  • Must be able to pass drug/alcohol testing.
  • Must have a clean driving record – may be required to drive GSA or tribal vehicles.
  • Availability to work evening and weekends periodically.
