JOB TITLE: City Attorney Deputy

SUPERVISOR: City Attorney

SALARY: $95,167 to $152,268 Annually

GENERAL JOB DESCRIPTION

Exercises broad discretion providing a wide range of legal services to the Mayor, City Council, City departments and various boards and commissions. Represents the City in litigation before courts and administrative bodies, including prosecuting criminal matters as assigned. Prepares pleadings, ordinances, resolutions, contracts, leases, permits, letters, memoranda, and other documents. Provides other assistance to the City Attorney.

PRIMARY DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Represent the City of Cheyenne in legal proceedings before a variety of courts and administrative bodies, including pre-trial hearings and depositions.
  • Respond to inquiries and provide legal advice on a variety of topics to the Mayor, City Council, City departments and various boards and commissions.
  • Provide proactive and preventive legal advice to prevent lawsuits, claims, and other issues from arising.
  • Prepare legal and other documents, including briefs, pleadings, ordinances, resolutions, contracts, leases, permits, letters, and memoranda.
  • Receive and respond to public inquiries, citizen complaints, and requests for information.
  • Perform general legal research; utilize law libraries and other research mechanisms; and keep current on relevant legal issues.
  • Maintain compliance with licensing and continuing legal education rules of the Wyoming State Bar.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES

  • Operations, services, and activities of a City Attorney’s Office.
  • Relevant principles of civil, criminal, constitutional and administrative laws, codes, and regulations.
  • Relevant principles of federal, state, and local civil and criminal procedure, and municipal law.
  • Methods and techniques of legal research.
  • Organization, duties, powers, limitations, and authority of City government.
  • Modern office procedures, methods, and equipment, including computers and applicable software applications.
  • Provide responsive, timely assistance to the City Attorney and other supervisory or management staff.
  • Prepare and prosecute civil cases.
  • Prepare clear and concise legal documents, briefs, and opinions.
  • Properly interpret and apply federal, state, and local laws, regulations and policies.
  • Communicate concisely and clearly, both orally and in writing.
  • Establish and maintain effective working relationships with those contacted in the course of work.
  • Understand and follow oral and written instructions.

QUALIFICATIONS FOR THE JOB

Required:

An active Wyoming State Bar license.

Preferred:

One (1) to five (5) years of increasingly responsible experience in the practice of law.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is required to maintain effective audio-visual discrimination and perception needed for making observations, communicating with others, reading, and writing. The employee is also required to maintain physical condition necessary for operating assigned equipment, walking, standing, kneeling, repeated bending or sitting for prolonged periods of time and lifting to 30 pounds. Maintain mental capacity which allows the capability of making sound decisions demonstrating intellectual capabilities.

Working Environment:

Work closely with others in an office environment utilizing a computer and other office equipment.
