Shift

Saturday commitment, typically 2-3 Saturdays per month, Day Shift (Eastern Time)

  • Onsite (Orlando, FL).

 

The community you'll be caring for

 

Since 1976, Lighthouse Central Florida has provided vision-specific rehabilitation, training, and education for people with sight impairment and their families. Lighthouse Central Florida is the only nationally accredited nonprofit provider in Florida's Orange, Osceola, and Seminole counties. In 2022 alone, 836 people who are blind or visually impaired were empowered through Lighthouse Central Florida services. This position is an integral role on our Youth Services Team.

 

About You

The role you'll contribute

Our Youth Services Instructors provide rehabilitation support services to individuals aged 14-22 who are living with visual impairments residing in the service area of Lighthouse Central Florida, Inc. (Orange, Osceola, and Seminole counties). You will facilitate engaging and interactive group activities that promote personal growth and development and collaborate with fellow Instructors and program coordinators to create a supportive and inclusive environment.

  • Support vision rehabilitation instruction, including Transition (teens') and Children's Program events, job coaching, and recreational activities.
  • Facilitate experiential education activities in support of specified vision rehabilitation goals.
  • Follow and assist in the preparation of lesson plans.
  • Participate in event planning and client staffing as requested.

 

Minimum Qualifications

  • High school diploma or equivalent required
  • Flexibility to work on weekends, specifically 2-3 Saturdays a month
  • Must pass Level II background check

 

Preferred Qualifications

  • A minimum of one year's experience working with individuals who have a disability is preferred.
  • Professional maturity, judgment, and objectivity
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills

Qualifications

Education:

  • Bachelor's Degree in education, psychology, social work, or related field (preference will be given to individuals with training/experience in visual impairments)

 

License and Certification:

  • None Required
    • Adult and Youth: CPR – First Aid Preferred

 

Experience: Minimum of one year experience working with individuals who have a disability preferred

 

Demonstrated Knowledge and Skills:

  • Possess excellent customer service skills
  • Ability to triage for service delivery
  • Possess knowledge of community and blindness resources
  • Possess excellent verbal and written communication skills
  • Possess a working knowledge of MS Word, Excel, and Outlook
  • Skilled in the use of standard business machines and computers
  • Possess an ability to utilize the database for client demographics, case documentation, and agency reports
  • Professional maturity, judgment, and objectivity
  • Possess effective organizational and time management skills with attention to detail
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with co-workers, management, business professionals, civic organizations, private corporations, and the general public
  • Ability to project a positive, compassionate image to the public
  • Ability to cope with and support change
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality as required within a variety of circumstances

 

Physical Demands:

  • Ability to move about independently
  • Moderate ability to move and lift items, usually up to 15 lbs.
  • Prolonged standing upon occasion
  • Prolonged sitting at a workstation

 

Requirements:

  • Hold valid Florida identification
  • Pass background checks
  • Have a reliable means of transportation

 

For employees living with visual impairments, you must provide documentation from a physician of legal blindness. Legal blindness is defined as: "Central visual acuity does not exceed 20/200 in the better eye with correcting lenses OR whose visual acuity, if better than 20/200, is accompanied by a limit to the field of vision in the better eye to such a degree that its widest diameter subtends an angle no greater than 20 degrees." These conditions are based on the federal Javits-Wagner-O'Day work program for legally blind individuals.
