Assistant Director – Aloha Camp

 

Position Summary

Aloha Camp is looking for an Assistant Director to join our Summer Team!

 

Aloha is a residential camp which offers 7th to 10th grade girls and gender expansive campers the opportunity to live amongst nature, let go of technology, learn and grow through a range of engaging daily activities, and live in a supportive uplifting community. Campers stay on campus for 3.5 or 7 weeks.

 

The Assistant Director position is a summertime role reporting to the Director. This position is full time and on site in Fairlee, Vermont from mid-June – mid-August, with the potential to start the role earlier in the spring in a remote part-time capacity.

 

Key Responsibilities

Oversee staff performance and wellbeing:

  • Create clear expectations and guidelines for staff to follow (most of our staff are between 18 and 28 years old)
  • Create a culture of challenge and support

 

Supervise Unit Heads’ performance, training and support:

  • Run regular Unit Head meetings and be a resource for advice, brainstorming and escalation when necessary
  • Role model an empowering approach to problem solving
  • Provide evaluations and feedback to Unit Heads and help them to review others while also helping them on their own performance

 

Oversee camp’s summer calendar and manage all camp special events:

  • Delegate and assign clear roles and expectations to counselors prior to and throughout summer
  • Support and collaborate with Program Director to ensure daily program is varied, engaging, challenging and inspiring for our campers
  • Organize and deliver daily announcements at each meal in a fun, engaging way

 

Work on camp’s Senior Leadership Team (with Camp Director and Program Director), in collaboration and support of the camp’s strategic and ad hoc needs:

  • Meet as a trio regularly to triage and delegate issues as needed.
  • Utilize key skills regularly: critical thinking, prioritization, challenging conversations, delegation, teamwork
  • Help coordinate, edit and send written letters to parents

 

Keep camp running smoothly in a 24/7 community:

  • Help collate maintenance requests and work with Buildings and Grounds team
  • Work with Head Chef and kitchen team to ensure food calendar is accurate and tasty
  • Cover for Director on weekly days off
  • Oversee and collect end of summer paperwork from staff in collaboration with Program Director

 

Requirements - Knowledge, Qualifications, Skills, Abilities

  • The capacity to work full-time on site in Vermont from mid-June until mid-August as well as in a part-time remote capacity starting in April to be trained and do preparation work for the summer (hours can be flexible)
  • Multiple years of experience working with adolescents and young adults in an educational or experiential education environment
  • Familiarity with living and working in a 24/7 environment
  • Experience coaching and mentoring children, adolescents or young adults
  • Excellent organizational skills and is a clear communicator
  • Can see a concept through to execution with minimal supervision
  • Experience event planning
  • The ability to speak to people of all ages and backgrounds in a professional and clear way – campers, counselors, parents, alumni and colleagues
  • A growth mindset and self-confidence
  • A commitment to Diversity, Equity and Inclusion as a daily practice of learning and helping build belonging
  • Be an advocate for camper and staff wellbeing and offer support and professional resources to community when needed

  • Take accountability for own actions; take ownership over responsibilities with a minimum of supervision 
  • Be flexible and adaptive; willing to take on other tasks and duties with minimal notice according to the vagaries of the situation 
  • Demonstrate commitment to ongoing personal and professional development 
  • Advance the mutual best interests of the Foundation in concert with the specific needs of individual programs
  • The AD must remain in compliance with Aloha Foundation policies, procedures, and best practices, working in collaboration with Program Directors, Assistant Directors, and Residential Directors across our six camp programs
